Tire pressure sensor checkout
Is there any way to verify a TPS works without it being installed? I was going through my stash of leftover parts and found a TPS that appears to be new. I had replaced one on my C5 but I believe I had ordered two because I thought I had two bad ones. I sent a bad one to a forum member that was working on a way to change out the batteries or something to that effect. If I could verify that this is a new one and works, I'd be willing to part with it for a good price. I don't want to sell someone a worthless part, however, so until I can verify it it's not for sale.
TIA
OK , two issues here.... you can check communications but not fuction, off the car...
But to check the sensor you have in hand, they are all date stamped..
the original sensors are date stamped ( month and year ) to be manufactured about 6 months prior to original build date.Your 98 first generation sensors should say 97 or 98 on the date stamp
If you have a new sensor, the date will be evident in the date stamp. If you bought them from a GM dealer they should relect a much newer date stamp.... many people sell old close to out of date sensors on ebay..they may be brand new but manufactured five or six years ago.

I am sure you would know. Can a test rig be set up to check the function? Would activating the communications with a magnet turn the sensor on or does it just turn on with centrifugal force?
I was thinking about building something out of PVC pipe, sch 80 large enough diameter to put the sensor inside with the valve stem sticking out, cap both ends and fill up to about 20 psi.

Here's what I have on the sensor. There is a bar code with the following info:
SBI Inc
1465239
There is another number that reads GMIC 422622 with a clock diagram above it pointing to 1 o'clock. There is also a green paint dot next to the bar code label. It looks new to me, what do you guys think?
the clock is the date stamp, and I can tell you that I have seen hundreds in the field, and I have never seen a date stamp like that on a sensor.,.. I have seen that type of date stamp but all the ones I have seen look just like that but the center section has a year number on it with an arrow. The only thing I can figure and this is thinking back that initial production runs had no year date only a month date which would make those produced in jan 97. I Have seen many 98 date stamps pointing to various months the 98 was in the center... also 99, and 00. The first beta test car was presented in 1995,
The C5 was offered to the public in March of 1997.

ET - Thanks for the info. This was ordered for my 98 in 2002. It came in a GM parts box. I ordered it from a friend in Phoenix that deals in new and used parts and accessories. My main goal is to determine if this sensor is serviceable so that it may be of use to anyone needing one. I don't want to sell a junk part to someone and go through the hassle of refunds and getting flamed on this forum.
Here is what a 1st generation sensor looks like with the date stamp.
Note the year ( 98 ) and the month ( 9 ).... also note the GM part # on the box is GM# 10438853 .
I hope this clears things up

ET - My box has the same PN as yours. I looked at the date stamp under a magnifying glass and there is a 99. One 9 on each side of the pointer. I'm guessing this was made Jan 1999 since the pointer is on the 1.
