ive got a 2002 6spd vert stock except varram headers and catback and have decided i want 4.10's and that is where my mods will end, my question is what is the best way to go about it , do i just get a ring and pinion, do i have to get bearings as well, or can i buy the hole diff head as a 4.10 . whats the best road to go down and how much would i be looking at installed. any advice would be appreciated
I have a 99 6spd coupe with a Vararam, Corsa cat back and 4.10’s and planning headers this summer. First of all, 4.10’s are one of the best mods you can do, whole different car. Feels like another 80hp. Traction will become you enemy though. Now I’m getting drag radials. As for the swap, I recommend getting a whole new differential from DTE (a forum supporting vendor) I got the stage 2 with the hardened left side output shaft. It cost me $1,549 plus $60 shipping. It cost me $400 to get it installed, but if you’re mechanical and have access to a lift and a transmission jack, it looked pretty easy to do yourself. The only mistake I made was not getting the DTE brace. It is known for saving many a differential when drag racing. I will be getting one soon. The reason I recommend DTE is there reputation for quality and customer service. They were great to deal with. I know I gave you a lot more information then you asked for, but that is because it is such a great mod. Good luck with your new gears!
thanks for the reply Clayton, and am greatful for all informaton,
is there any reason to not get just the ring and pinion, im not a drag racer but enjoy nailing it here and there

Yes, I have heard that unless the installer really knows what they are doing and how to set it up "JUST RIGHT" you will have all sorts of noise and premature breakage problems. Getting a new properly set up differential will be cheaper in the long run.

Exactly!
DTE is one of the best if not the only company that builds complete diffs for the C5, and does so with very high standards. Check out what all they do to their diffs: www.dynotech-eng.com/dte_c5_diff.htm
Install cost should be $400-$500 depending on location and shop.
I don't think you would be able to put the 4:10 ring and pinion in the carrier you have. Best bet, get a new diff and either install it your self or have it done. Sell your 3:42s on the forum-a4 guys usually go to 3:42s if they are going to be doing any road driving at all. Depending on the milage on your diff you can probably get $350-500 for it.
Yep, I think wettvette is delusional. When I got my car just less then a year ago I was going to leave it stock. Now $4,000 later, and still going strong.
