Default Possible explanation for difference in oil fill-up

This may have been considered. But I believe that the reason some posters are having to add 7 quarts (instead of 6 and a half as per the manual) may have to do with the actual oil changing procedures. If you take your Vette to the dealership, they will normally lift your vehicle (not drive it up on ramps) and hopefully use the lifting points with pads and then drain the oil, change the filter and add the 6 and half qts. Most at home oil changers usually raise the rear of the Vette (or even keep it "level") and end up adding 7 qts. Here's the deal...the do it yourself changers don't realize that if you keep the Vette level (i.e. all four tires touching the ground or all tires touching the ramps on the drive-on type 4 post lifts...you are not really level. I placed a carpenter's leveler on the frame below the rocker panel and when the Vette sits on all four tires...it's not level...the frame is actually getting higher as it goes to the rear. This means that when you change the oil you will get all of it out (probably the full 7 qts), whereas at the dealership when they "lift" your car, the frame is now perfectly level and only the 6 and half quarts will drain (they never raise the rear end to get the last bit of oil out). This could explain why some say it takes 7 qts to fill vice 6 and a half as the manual states. Any thoughts out there??

The difference is 2001s take 7 quarts and 97-00s take 6 1/2 quarts. The problem is people don't read the posts or take into account any possible changes made during production.

Yellow, 6spd owned since 6/26/01. 2800 miles.

When my mechanic friend and I changed the oil for the first time at 1300 miles we first drove up on little wood ramps made of 2x6. He then pulled the plug and we let it drain long time. Then I took his floor jack and jacked it up in back. As I did a lot more oil came out and we let it drain for a long time again. Maybe we let it drain for an our all to gether, it was a Sunday. We olny put 6.5 quts back at that time. I took the half qut and checked it after it sat level for 45 mins and it needed the rest to fill to full line. Now the car has 2800 miles and when last I checked I had no visible loss. The car is in the shop however. A crack is being taken out just forward of drivers mirror. They should have caught it at the factory. The shop I am have do the work said three days it's been a week. All warranty work. [IMG][/IMG] :mad   :mad :D
