This is for a 98’ auto with 42,000 miles on the clock. It has never been raced but a Superchips program has been installed since it was almost new giving it firmer shifts at a higher RPM. I was thinking I should have the fluid changed. Am I correct? If so, what brand/type of fluid should I purchase and how many quarts will I need? Thanks!

I used a Pontiac dealership (Fred Beans) and did the total fluid change (Dexron III) @ 60K, cost $125. Pan removal, clean & refill only replaces 4-5 quarts, not all 12 qts.
I like the results I've seen the the AMSOIL universal atf. I've used it in my vette and theresa's as well as many of my customers. And it will mix with dexron if you are looking to do this your self and are only dropping the pan and not a flush..
BTW:
If you are going to DIY I am taking 5 bucks off all trans filter kits we carry with the purchase of 6 qts of amsoil atf.

I'll second Rick's recommendation and suggest you take him up on his offer. The AMSOIL ATF meets the C5/Z06 manual and automatic transmission fluid requirement for a Dexron III fluid. I've been running this fluid in my car on the track for over two seasons now with no tranny issues.
I will not be doing this myself. Should I still go ahead and do it at this point in time? Also, is it okay to mix what's in the car from the factory with 4-5 quarts of AMSOIL ATF?

Does the Amsoil hold up better to high heat in the A4 than Dextron??
I still gotta call you for the Amsoil 10-40 (pretty sure thats the weight I will go with but still considering 5-40)

AMSOIL ATF can be mixed with the stock fluid. Personally, I'd replace mine if it had 42k miles on it. If you can't take it to Rick, make sure that whoever you take it to replaces the filter and doesn't just evacuate and replace the fluid.
The tranny is this car, whether auto or manual, gets very hot given how little airflow it has to cool it, and the extra heat it picks up from the exhausts being nestled right up next to it, and from the diff being bolted to it. Heat is really hard on fluids. Synthetic will hold up much better than the stock fluid in the conditions seen in our trannies.

AMSOIL ATF is does meet GM Dexron III standards. The factory fill is a conventional fluid, not synthetic. You can see for yourself on this link how the AMSOIL ATF holds up in the High Temperature Life Test compared to the Dexron III standard.
Drop me a PM if you have any further questions regarding 5w40 vs 10w40 for track use.
Will the dealer use Amsoil if I bring it or does the flushing use excess of the actual capacitiy of the trans?
DH
They should use whatever fluid you bring in, particularly since it is labeled to meet the owner's manual requirements. My wife does that when I'm at sea. She just grabs a few bottles of AMSOIL off the shelf, goes to the dealer or a local quick lube, hands them the fluid, then keeps half an eye on them to make sure that's what they actually put in.
The flush will take more fluid than the actual capacity of the tranny, though I'm not exactly sure how much more.
Well I wound up having my new Dewitts Radiator installed sooner than I had expected. And I wanted to have my tranny service at same time. So I had to run out to Pep Boys last nite to get fluids. I wound up getting the Mobile 1 ATF (Dextron V)....it took 6 quarts. Bottle said good to mix with ALL ATF.........I hope it was ok. I will be doing this every 6 months or so. Do you think some DexIII, Mobil and Amsoil ATF is ok..........
