Mine came with that dinky sponge jacket. When I changed my original 6yr old Delco, I did re-use it on the DieHard replacement. It's listed as an Insulator,Bat in the parts description. It's purpose, I don't know, but thought maybe it was there to help protect the other parts from spillage/leakage.
Maybe it's to help keep cold weather from killing the battery? I dunno, I didnt get anything like that. I switched to an Optima Red Top about a week or so ago.
Heading out today to buy my red top! When the battery is disconnected does it screw up any computer things? Other than the radio is there anything else that needs to be rest?
From what I've read, the black battery jacket is supposed to keep the heat down on the battery (it get's hot under a Corvrtte hood). It is an insulator, not a battery acid collector although it's probably soaked if you have a leaking battery. The original one from DELCO will fit a 78 profile traditional battery, probabaly won't work on a '6 Pack' OPTIMA since the insulator is shaped to be used for a square sided battery.
