Radiator hose collapses
The lower radiator hose coming from thermostat on my '01 M6 collapses when the engine is cold. It is firm when engine warms up and feels okay.
Is this normal or is it time to replace hose?

Mine does that....no biggy...FWIW I replaced my hoses at 50K....they still looked fine....probably should have done it sooner just as part of general maintenance. Did the belts at the same time...

You have a coolant expansion tank. As the coolant heats and expands, the excess volume goes into the tank and when the coolant cools off, it should freely pull the coolant back into the engine cooling system. If it doesn't, the valves that regulate this flow are stuck. It shouldn't collapse the hoses.

Check your overflow tank pressure-relief cap.

Hoses should never collapse, and it is not the fault of the hose.
If the hose on the inlet of the water pump is collapsing, I would be worried about starving the water pump.

How do you do this? Should the cap be replaced as a safe measure?
I unscrewed the cap and removed, washer looks okay.

You can have the cap pressure tested, but its easier to just replace the cap... Contact gene culley at Fred beans, or just go to your local dealer...

So what if it does it periodically?? I would think if my cap was bad it would do it all the time.

Collapsing Hose
Only takes once for the hose to collapse and starve the water pump. The relief valve may not stick every time because the driver may not use his car the same way everytime or the weather conditions may change. Used to be a pretty common thing "back in the day" and you would change the radiator cap.

I had the same thing happen last year. I cleaned the cap and haven't had a problem since. A replacement from a dealer is cheap too.
