Please help. Started my 98 today and heard a high pitch whine. Turned car off and it kept whining. The only way I could stop it was to disconnect the battery. By the time I had gotten the wrench to disconnect the battery something was smoking from the passenger side of the engine. Can't be positive where it's coming from, but it's around the head area I believe. Anybody else had this problem? any ideas?!
Does your battery show signs of leaking? I wonder if the whine and the problem starting now could just be a bad battery. Perhaps you should take it to the auto parts store and have it tested.
I'm not sure if it's a starter problem or what. But if it was would i have been able to shut the car off and restart it? It's more of a squeal than a whine though.. kinda like those old slot car motors... Same sound just louder and smells the same too..
Well, the starter sounds like a good candidate. Why don't you connect the battery and crawl under the car to see if the whine is coming from the starter?
I could do that.. Here goes the long walk again... Gotta hate when your only car takes a crap, LOL. At least I only made it a couple blocks before i rolled the windows down and heard it! Thanks for the help.. Hopefully that's it. If not.. I'll be back in about an hour.. LOL
