Default Ripper problem (5th gear) at 140 mph

During PDA event at Pocono's I had problems going in to fifth gear when I was in fourth at the read line ~138mph. The gear would not go in or it would take a long time to get it in. What could be the problem? Did you have this happen?

ElDiablo,

My guess is that the clutch is dragging instead of giving full disengagement from the flywheel/pressure plate surfaces.

Wish I had the definitive answer for ya. I don't. Have you changed the fluid and bled the hydraulic system? If not that may be worth a try.

I've wondered if the system doesn't collect a little moisture over time and when sufficiently heated, especially in the slave cylinder area, it vaporizes and gives the result you indicate. It may be a reach, but might be worth considering, especially if a fluid change and bleed improves the situation.

Then there is the ongoing inquirey about the restriction in the hose. I think MelloYellow has had a new hose made up, to help remedy this situation and is going to get back to us. Hope the slave clyinder doesn't have to be replaced.

If you find a solution, we'll all be interested in what you find.

Good luck.
Mark

My guess is that it would be a clutch issue as well. I know when my clutch was on its way out it would do the same thing.

Did the pedal feel weird before or after this happened?

Any C5 that is driven hard for racing, etc is going to wreck the stock clutch and need an upgrade, there is no question about that.

Clutch feels fine. I don't have problems shifting at regular speeds.

Not necessarily a clutch issue. I had a Ripper in my 2000 Coupe and until it was fully broken in, 1-4 were the only gears readily accessible without a LOT of effort. When I replaced the 2000 with the 2001, I pulled the Ripper out and installed it in my 2001. Now I have no problems with getting 5th and 6th gear. I think you just need to use it more in those upper gears to allow it to fully seat. Just my $.02 :chevy

Hi there Adam,
You are probably experiencing a slow blocker ring engagement on the 5th syncronizer. Depending on the fluid used, the blocker ring could be hanging.
I have your VIN, and will research the issue.
Did you get your post card about the parts??c4c5

I really want to hear what C4C5 Spec has to say, after he does some investigating. I've had this problem from day one my 97!
