There is a good little trick to bleed air from the coolant system that will allow more coolant to enter. Simply pull one of the hoses that heats up the throttle body and watch it as you add coolant. When it starts coming out, slip the hose back on. I've always found it difficult with GM cars, including a C4, to get half of the flush water out of the system. Whatever the listed coolant system capacity, you want to add half of this as antifreeze. On some cars, running the engine till the thermostat opens allows you to get some more in. Usually, when the radiator won't take any more, I add antifreeze that should go into the system to a dry overflow tank. After a couple days of driving, overflow coolant going back and forth seems to mix the antifreeze in.

The service manual has a specific procedure for getting the air out of the coolant system. I followed that procedure. I think my new thermostat also came with the detailed instructions.
