I don’t want to start any more problems with which CAI is best, but you state that if the coolant temp is high enough to start the fans, then fresh air is being drawn in from the outside. First of all, most drag racers are busy in the staging area to do what ever they can to cool the engine, i.e.: open hood, ice box or whatever, so hopefully the engine is cool enough as to not turn on the fans. Secondly, the Honker draws in air from the bottom of the front of the car where the temperature is higher from the ground and from behind the radiator after the heat transfer has taken place to the coolant, even when moving. Why don’t you perform a test to measure IAT using the Vararam. In my humble opinion, I draw the following conclusions:
1. The air being drawn in is cooler through the Vararam then the Honker.
2. The Vararam does have more curves and bends then the Honker.
3. No comparison of filters, the Honker is much better.
4. No comparison of manufacturing quality, Honker wins hands down.
5. The Vararam is almost half the price of the Honker.
Considering these conclusions, The Vararam will outsell the Honker by a huge margin. It accomplishes all the performance enhancements racers are looking for, better then the Honker.

OK, flame away
You are wrong! The air feeds in from the FRONT of the radiator, where it is completley sealed from the engine compartment air. Also there is only a few inches difference from the bottom of the car to the fog light openings.
It seems that some of us are pretty strong in AERO ENGINEERING here around, and I personally would like to read from those who know please :
- the "Air Pressure #" & Air Speed # around the fog light on the road or in the wind tunnel
- the "Air Pressure #" & Air Speed # inside the radiator shroud on the road or in the wind tunnel
My only comment for the moment is that I very rarely find bugs or any debris around the fog light or in the fog light screens but my radiator is always full of crap....
But I don't know if it as a relation with the Air around one or the other, I only can make suppositions or emit hypothesis....NOTHING SCIENTIFIC
I had to look through the archives but I found test results that will apply to your Z06.
With an '03 Z06 engine, we recorded an increase of 20.8 bhp (SAE-corrected), on the engine dyno. The only change was installing a production Honker.
So, it comes down to this: I have a Z06 with a Blackwing and a carbon fiber duct that looks sweet. The car goes like stink already and I don't race it at the track. Whether I spend $320 for a Vararam or $490 for a Honker will come down to how much is a few HP is worth to me and what would the real world difference be in performance. I think neither will be worth it.
I had the Vortec for a year and it was sweet, but I didnt like the look. When replacing it, I considered the Vararam, but the quality issues I have read about bothered me. The Vararam is probably good for a few more horsepower, but looks rigged up to me. The Blackwing looks very cool in there and if the the foglight covers are removed, Z06 screens installed you get some cool air from the front of the car. No ram effect,
but I think it looks better than the Vararam.
