My 01 Vert is eating batteries...The car has 11,000 miles and has gone through three batteries. We just got the car from a good friend, who put a red top Optima in the car about six months ago. We used the car last Thursday and it was fine, this morning it was dead.
Tonight I put the charger on and something in the car starting clicking loudly! I unplugged the charger, disconnected the battery from the car and put the charger back on the battery.
My Red Top lasted about 3 months, died after sitting for several weeks, tried recharging, didn't help. Put my old battery in and all is well again. Obviously, I'm not a fan of the Red Top. Do a search on Red Tops and you'll find mixed feelings.
I put my Red Top in during the summer of 03. It sat all that winter and started up with no probs the next spring. Winter 04, it sat again all winter and I had to jump it several times during the spring and it was fine all summer. Winter 05, sat again all winter and I still have to jump it, but it's getting a lot more difficult. I'm gonna have to get a new one in the next few weeks. Right now, I'm not too impressed with the Optima, but at least it didn't leak acid all over my garage floor like the OEM one did.
If you've gone through three batteries, I would think you have corrosion in the terminals that is ruining the next battery. May need to look into replacing the positve or negative or both The chances of going through 3 batteries in such a short time, and it being due to 3 defective batteries is small...but it is possible
After an entire night on the charger I reconnected the battery, the security was activated so of course it went crazy, but the good news is I found the problem. The trunk had been left partially open so the lights were on for six days...no wonder the battery was dead!
