on a recent trip to florida my 00 coupe threw the serp belt twice!! limped back home but does anyone know whats goin on??i have heard that c5's can sometimes have a wobble in the harmonic pulley jus need some answers??
I'de bet you a cold one that your harmonic balancer has either moved inward or out-ward (misaligned) and if you dont get it fixed, you could be in for some SERIOUS damage. Take a look at the balancer with the engine running. See if it wobbles. Also sight down the other pulleys and see if it is obiously out of line. That is the most common cause for throwing belts! There are people on here that have had engines at 7000 rpm and the belts live happy! That is NOT normal and pointing to the balancer.
See if you can take a look at the balancer bolt with a mirror and a light and see if it is loose.
I am having the same problem with my 00 vert. I sat on the side of the road on the cortney camble to day. Got a tow to the AAA garage. They replace the Belt and slack adjuster. ($220.00) Then he cranked it up and said that the Harmonic balancer is bad. I took it home. I am now looking around for someone that can change it for me.
Happened to me. The crank pulley had moved towards the front about 1/2" and the belt would not stay on. Check another C5 if you can to see the spacing.
Is this something that can be done in my garage without lifting it up??? And does it always need to be replaced???
As good insurance that the problem won't come back; it is strongly recc. that the balancer be replaced. You could use the old balancer, assuming it has not separated, and pin the crank. But, by the time you've done all that, it would be just as easy to replace the balancer.
