I recently broke my left output shaft. Can I replace with my hardened shaft witout removing the 3rd member from the tranny? Any do it your self write ups? I do have a manual, however, it's a little hard to understand, and of course because they have a lift no problem pulling the entire unit. Thanks
Robert

No you can not, the entire diff must be removed from the car because of one small steel plate that is bolted in place with bolt from under the trans side of the case. The bolts can't be removed before you remove the diff from the trans. This plate prevents the ring gear from coming out the side cover so no way to get the carrier out without removing the plate first. Below is a photo showing the plate and how it is bolted into the rear diff.
Someone here can't remember who has a good write up on how to remove the diff from the car, I'm sure they will chime in soon.
SpeedyZ, thanks, that's what I thought, but was hoping that someone had come up with a work around, wishfull thinking.
Mike M, I have your write up and was looking at it today, thanks for putting it together.
Mike04, no you can't drive it after breakage. Some true mechanical lockers you can, but I believe you have to pressure on both sides of the clutch pack, or something like that, in order for power to get to the ground.
Thanks alot guys. Yes it's a big job for a do it yourselfer, however, the money saved likely will be great. Any ideas on shop price to r/r a axle.

I'd think it would be about like a clutch, figure $300-500. Don't forget to add the dyno-tech diff clutch pack while your in there. Did the breakage occur at the track on drag radials? What are you leaving the line at by the way?

Yea, after approx 160 passes. I had just upped the first stage and going for 10.xx@130 range, with a 5500rpm clutch dump (as per normal) on 315 BFG's, however, they just sprayed the track with VHT and a dead hook ensued. I had been on borrowed time for a while.

SpeedyZ... that's quite a revealing pic you posted. Hope you don't mind that I right-clicked ... saved-as ???
No problem, here is the same image without all the captions. I didn't take too many photos while working on the diff, I didn't have anyone else to take photos and after working on the diff for a few minutes I was not going to touch my camera! I didn't want to go wash up every two minutes either! So I only have start, middle and complete. Obviously this photo is the middle!
