Default Cable adjust for automatic??

Ok, ive reciently replaced the automatic transmission cable on my 98. Ive been trying to dial in the control box on the side of the transmission, But the box needs to come about 1/4 of an inch lower to be perfect. I have to act like im about to pull it into 3rd for it to ingage in OD. This means, I need to shorten the actual cable about 1/4 of an inch, or more and just raise the box a little. Is there a way to shorten or adjust the actual cable? Everything works fine, and driving is fine, but the shifter is just off about 1/4 of an inch. Thanks.

I went to GM to talk to the service dept, and he wasnt there when I had time to stop by.

I actually have a very cool GM shop in my town, I went in for an O-ring, and the GM was 4.99, he pulled out a box of aftermarket O-rings, and said heres the same size, take it.

Im hoping the service dept can shed some light on the subject.

Anybody have an online service manual? Damn I need to buy one of those.

Did you adjust the transmission side of the shift cable using the plastic clip? When the clip is loosened the shifter can be synchronized to the transmission and then the clip is tightened to lock the setting. Check the shop manual.

I think you need to look at the plastic clip, it is adjustable. Easy fix if thats the issue.

If you are talking about the cable that runs from the shifter to the tranny? If so, did you make sure it was installed with the car in Neutral? If so, did you take the red square piece off that connects to the tranny? If so, take that off and you should have your problem fixed. I had a similiar problem come up and that turned out to be the problem.

BTW...did you install that cable yourself? Wasn't it a PITA to install?

Interested to learn if this was the problem or what it may turn out to be.

I was trying to find out if the cable was adjustable.

I installed it myself, wasnt too bad since I have a trap door right behind my shifter.

Now that I know that cable is adjustable, and what to look for. Ill work on that tomorow.

Thanks.

It isn't really adjustable. Make sure that when you do everything that the car is in Neutral and if you have not removed that square cap, do so. Once that piece is done, things should be good to go. If you are off a gear, you shouldn't be if you installed everything in Nuetral, disconnect once you know the car is in nuetral and reinstall it.

Yes, The cable is adjustable, or at least mine was. Take a small flat blade screw driver and pry up the tab at the transmission end of the cable. Do not remove it. You should then be able to slide the plastic end to fit. Good luck.
