Installed hurst short shifter in my Z06 the other day and instructions said to remove rubber band. It was located on top of the tunnel behind the shifter cut out, also the number 824 etched on top of the tunnel next to the rubber band. Does anyone know the reason for this?????????????
No!!! If you remove that rubber band the transmission will fall out!!
Just kidding. It's used on the assembly line to retain the shift rod before being placed in the shifter assembly. Don't sweat it, but if in 50 years you want to sell your car at a Jackson-Barrett auction, maybe you should keep it in a baggie.

Thanks, Dan the C5 Man, I was just curious why it was there. I never removed it anyway. I thought it might throw the balance of the car off.
Haha! I didn't sleep one whole night wondering about that damned rubber band! I started to tear mine down one night but didn't have the right torx driver to take off the console. All night, I was wondering why the previous owner needed to use a rubber band and what gum fudging I was going to find the next day! Good news in the end.
