Default C5 Stock air filter box

New to the forum. After reading on air intake systems I went with the zip-tie method until I can figure out the right air intake for the right $$$( ). Can anyone who has tried this method tell me what where the results and can I do any harm to the engine with no cover (dirt, rain etc) Thanks

The zip tie mod is a very inexpensive alternative. Water will leak on the exposed filter element unless you get a rubber gasket to seal the front of the hood. As far as how effective it is in preventing dirt from bypassing the filter around the edges is anyone's guess.

This is my theory of the whole air intake topic. Your throttle body is only so big. As long as there is not a smaller opening anywhere in front of it, only so much air can get in. Other than a ram air affect, such as the Vararam system which froces air into the system through the fog light housings, the outcome will probably be the same. I dont think the zip tie mod will be any different than say the Z06 lid, which is what I have with a K&N filter. As long as the filter you use has a high flowing filter element, you should be good. I also have the fog light housings cut wide open for cool air to get into the engine compartment. Anyway this is my opinion.

Default air filter

Thanks all for the reply. The stock Z06 box with a K&N filter was one of my choices.

i cut a big rectangular hole on my stock lid and put a k&n in it and it looks way cleaner than the zip tie mod but i'm not too happy about the water dropping on the bottom of the filter,i also cut holes on the fog light panel for more air.
