Default Anyone here have a fuseable link fail?

My '99 coupe is at the dealership with a charge system failure. The mechanic says it's a blown 5 guage fuseable link and that the warehouse and factory don't have stock. It's supposedly on order from the oem supplier, about a week to get it. The dealer doesn't know why it blew. Has anyone else had this problem? Any explainations as to what went wrong? The car has 8k miles on it. Thanks for any feedback!

Got the car back this afternoon. They replaced the link and decided that it failed due to a loose connection on the starter wire that caused arcing & low voltage <high amperage according to ohm's law> resulting in the burned link.

In case anyone else has the problem.

You have ohms law wrong. When a connector goes resistive, the circuit will draw less current not more.

As I said in my response to your first post on the subject:

Fusible links and fuses can burn out at lower than rated current, if something pre-heats them. If you had a bad connection near the link that got heated up by high currents going thru it, it could cause the link to fail.
If a crimp or terminal turned resistive, pushing the current needed to turn the starter would generate a ton of heat in the resistive section.

It is a shot in the dark, but if the crimps that connects the actual fusable section of the link to it's connection wires are bad, they will be "blue" due to overheating. Cut the link open and look at it. Also check if the link was rubbing on to something that could heat it up.

You could also have an intermittant short somewhere. This would be a real PITA to find.
