Default Short Shifter Problems

I bought a 97 a couple year back, and it came with a short shifter already installed. It works great other than that it is hard to get it into 1st sometimes and likes to pop out of 1st. All other gears work great. I looked for a brand name and couldn't find one so I am guessing it's a cheapy. Would a name brand shifter solve my problem or does it sound like I have other issues. Thanks!

IMO could be other problems. However if it has adjustable stops the stop may have come loose and out too far.

Just because it does not have a brand on it, does not mean it is cheap. I have a Hurst billet shifter and there is no brand on it, probably because once it is installed, you cannot see it anyway.

Would have to see a picture to identify it. Try looking on some of the websites that have pictures of the different shifters and see if you find one that looks like what you have.

By the way, getting into first gear can be tricky with any shifter until you get the feel of it going in all the way. There are definitely two detents you can feel as it goes into gear. It only popped out of gear on me once before I started making sure it went in all the way. Sometimes it helps to go to second, then up to first if it does not go into first on the first try.

I have a stock shifter and it sometimes pops out if I don't shift into first fully. Try fully engaging. I have read other posts that this happens in C5s sometimes.

You may want to try synthetic ATF in your transmission case if you haven't already changed it to synthetic. I changed mine to synthetic when I changed my stock shifter to a C6 shifter and I have completely eliminated the occassional popping out of 1st gear and reverse.

A note of caution...early MN6's can not tolerate synthetic ATF in the transmission case due to some paper elements. My '98 MN6 has not had a problem with synthetic ATF...but I am no expert so I suggest you check with a more knowlegible source...e.g. ET or Patches.

Thanks guys,
I too noticed that it really helps if I go to 2nd then to 1st. The shifter has a light blue anodized aluminum part that bolts to the car if that is any indication. Thanks for all the help.

My Hurst shifter has a gold base. I think a blue base is probably a B&M shifter.
Does it look like what is on this web page?

All C5s can use synthetic fluid in the manual transmission. None of them had the "paper" parts.

From what I remember that's what it looks like. I know they make a good shifter. I remember taking it out and looking to find a marking somewhere on it with no luck. Does anyone have that style shifter and is there an adjustment on it. Sometimes it feels all the way in and just slams out of gear, and it's usually in a parking lot with a ton of people.

I don't remember where, but I do recall reading that the early T56s used paper gaskets and could not accept synthetic.

It sounds like the B&M ripper shifter which imo is a very good shifter and no it is not adjustable. I have the same thing happen to me fairly often (popping out of first on take-off) and I always write if off as driver error. It does help to put it in second while stopped and then move up into first and make double sure it is all the way engaged into gear. I don't think there is anything wrong with the tranny it is just a little hard to put into first sometimes, no big deal.
