a man with a z06 showed this to me tonight...what does it exactly do and how much does it help in the 1/4 mile? (hold traction control button down) and it says competitive drving on the display under the guages
Standard mode is with ABS, traction control, and stability control. Then you can turn both TC and SC off, and competitive (or competition whatever) mode is ABS with stability control, and no traction control.
Its not really for drag racing, it basically lets you drive the car as hard as you want on road courses and the like, but uses the SC to save you if you screw up and push it past its limits. Not like traction control, which basically doesn't let you do anything fun.

Wait, is that right? I thought you can turn just traction control off with the Traction Control button, and still have Active Handling on, but Comp. mode turns off both, but leaves ABS on. Am I mistaken?
ABS is always on no matter what. When you start your car Traction control and Stability Control are automatically on by default. Hit the button and TC and SC are off and you are on your own to do donuts or wreck the car. Hold the button down for 5 sec and Active handling is on.....which is SC but no TC. So you can launch and spin the wheels at the dragstrip and if you get sideways at 100mph, the SC will still save yer A$$.....hopefully.

Thanks for the clarification.
But I tell you what, it almost seems as it would've been smarter to make keeping active handling on without traction control EASIER not HARDER. I mean, press the button quickly and have no help from the system at all, because Traction Control AND Active Handling are off? But, press the button and hold it for 5 seconds and you get to keep Active Handling on without Traction Control? It doesn't seem to make sense to make it HARDER for the driver to be safer. That's kind of like making a computer operating system where you press the Start button to Shut Down!
Keep in mind you might not have this capablity. My 99 Hardtop has it but two friends with 2000's don't and two others with 00's do. I'm not sure when Chevy made it standard but with the 97 - 00 it was hit and miss. - C.

Generation I Active handling became an option in late 1998, and remained an option through the 2000 model year. Beginning in 2001, Generation II Active Handling became a, no-cost, standard feature on all Corvettes. Generation II Active Handling is less intrusive than Generation I and Competitive Driving can be activated while the car is moving. With Generation I, the car cannot be moving at the moment of Competitive Driving engagment. In other words, you can push the button down rolling up to a light, but at the moment of timeout, the car must be stopped or it will not engage. Also, Generation II Active Handling will allow you to powerbrake the car, and Generation I will actually downpower the car if you try to powerbrake it. Probably more than you wanted to know, but that's it in a rather lengthy nutshell.

It is a pain to activate the competition mode, but it's the best way to drive for a spirited run. I drove a friends C6 the other day, and they've improved the system. On the new car you hit the button once to kill traction control, and then again to disable everything. Hit it a third time and all are back on.

Dead on. I ALWAYS run in competitive mode. It doesn't HELP your 1/4 mile runs, but can save your ***...
Luckily, I've never had it kick in in any of my passes at the track!

The Laptrax thing is awesome.... Great the Deluxe model, it'll reset the DIC for ya. One thing you'll want to keep in mind, should you ever need to re-flash your computer - UNPLUG IT!!!!
So can someone define what Stability Control REALLY is ??
I mean, it seems like it's related to traction... can someone just explain both in terms of what the car does under a Traction Control Situation and a Stability Control situation?
