Default Start problem

2002 auto
2nd time this has happened this week. Turn the key to the start position, dash lights go out (normal) but no click of the starter solonoid....no anything. Move the shifter in and out of park, still nothing. Did this a few times then let it rest about a minute and it started. The first time I moved it in and out of park and it worked but this time the park switch didn't seem to matter. Any ideas?

Battery is going South or maybe a loose connection at the battery.

I have had a similar problem before where it was a dead spot on the starter rotor. I could tap the starter with a mallet, and it would start. Had to replace the starter.

I also had a problem where the car would start one time, and not the next, and it ended up being a bad ground cable off the battery. Cable looked fine, but I replaced the cable and never had the problem again.

Electrical problems can be hard to trace.

Jeez....I've had that car 4½ years. Time flys. I'll clean the terminals and give it a load test.

If you find the battery tests fine, and connections are good, there is a ton of troubleshooting info in these threads which may help you in isolating the problem.

Y2Kvert4me, it looks like you had the same thing. Were you able to hear the starter solonoid click? Was the problem the actual starter or the solonoid? My solonoid does not click when the key is turned.

It did not click that I could hear.

Whether it was the starter, or the solenoid didn't much matter...the replacement starter comes complete with solenoid.

Before you automatically suspect the starter though, Kind of follow my route of troubleshooting as I'm sure I've typed out in one of those linked threads. ...there are a lot of components in the starting circuit that could cause identical no-start symptoms.
You really need to get at that theft deterrant relay with a voltmeter to see what's going on, it is the core of the starting circuit, and a few checks here can quickly narrow down the problem area It could send you in a completely different direction than the starter.

This sort of intemittant problem can be very frustrating to find, because you can only test stuff when the problem is actually occuring.
