Default Check Engine light

My car has been at the dealers for over a week because they can't figure out why the Check Engine Light keeps getting tripped. They say they can't Figure it out. Here is the background and situation:

My car is a '99 A4 with TTS long tube headers, a cold air intake system, TTS Powerloader, and minor exhaust mods...like Bassani X pipe and Tubi Exhaust.

A little Background information: When I first installed the LT headers a few years ago I had 02 sensor issues that required me to change the sensors. Everything was fine until about 6 months ago when the transmission blew. As I was driving away from the dealership after the repair the Check engine light came on. They replaced two sensors...I believe the front. Everything was fine for a couple of months....then the CEL came on again....

The Current problem is that the check engine light has been on for about a month or so. When I finally brought the car to the dealership...They said that all four O2 sensors were bad and needed replacing. They did that...But, they say that the problem has not gone away...and they can't figure out how to make it go away.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What codes are displayed when the CEL is on? Also, check the wiring harness by the throttle body motor. If you have any wires with the insulation burned or scraped off, that will cause phantom CEL condition as the wire touches the block or tb housing (sometimes also accompanied by a bogus P0101 code).

Unfortunately I didn't check the codes before I brought the car to the dealer. They told me that it was throwing codes for all four o2 sensors...but, I don't know what other codes were set.

You can check to see what code is displayed on your DIC that caused the check engine light to come on using the following steps:
Key combination that can get the DIC to show any codes the car has thrown without autotap, etc. That combination is as follows:
1. Turn the ignition key to the ON position, but do not start the car.
2. Clear any pre-set messages by pressing the RESET button.
3. Hold the OPTIONS button down, and press the FUEL button 4 times. This will get you into the CODES section of the DIC. The computer will automatically display all the codes your car has created. It will cycle through each code every 3 seconds. Any code that ends in H is a code that was registered previously but is no longer an issue.
4. Once the computer has finished going through all of it's codes, press RESET to enter Manual Configuration mode. It should start with a module and show "NO CODES" or "# CODES".
5. To optionally reset the codes once in manual mode, press and hold RESET until it displays "NO CODES". You may not want to reset any codes until you have written them down for reference.
6. Press OPTIONS button to go to the next module.
7. Refer to the following list of codes to diagnose the problem:

I suspect you're going to have some 0140's and/or 0420's

With LT's you can get bad rear 02 readings because of the change in airflow. The good thing is the rear 02's are only there to warn of emission faults (and they don't effect the tuning like the fronts).

Stealership working on your car???

Yea,,,, they will replace all four O2 sensors, the intake manifold, the left tail light assay, the transmission, the engine, the EBTCM, the transparent top, all four wheel hubs, the water pump, the steering rack assay, the Cigar lighter each fuse and relay and the rear end. Sooner or later that will fix the problem or your bank account.

Oh, yea, I forgot to mention, it's almost EASTER, so they don't feel bad about easter egging parts until the problem is fixed.

Don't ya just love it when they spend YOUR money, and DON'T even fix the problem!!

Glad I found this-I have LT's-getting CEL- Code 140 & 141 Are these no.'s for the rear or front.

These two codes both refer to the driver's side (Bank 1) rear O2 sensor (i.e. after the cat).

Here is a detailed description of the P0141 code for a 2003, and here is a detailed description of the P0140 code for a 2003.

DTC P0140 HO2S Circuit Insufficient Activity Bank 1 Sensor 2
DTC P0141 HO2S Heater Performance Bank 1 Sensor 2

Thanks for the help. I called the dealership and asked them to check the # 15 fuse. Does anyone know what this fuse protects?

From what I understand those codes have to do with the headers (and particularly, high flow cats) flowing more air so the 02's don't register enough temp (and indicate a failure).

FWIW, I edited those codes out using HPTuners.

They're really just annoying (vs. an indication of something flipping out), but it does get old reseting those and the MIL light.

If you had an '03 and were close I'd edit them out for you! Heck, you can probably find a LS1edit, HPTuners, etc., user somewhere close by for a quick fix up! I guess 02 sims would work too.

I just talked to the technician that is working on my car....He said that the codes he is getting are P1133 and P1153 that deal with switching times. He tried replacing the sensors, providing a direct ground, and checked for exhaust leaks and he is still getting the codes. This fault is checking to verify that the 02 levels are switching from lean to rich. The problem seams to be that they are not cycling enough to the lean side. I suggested that maybe the long tube headers were causing a rich condition....but he didn't think that was causing the problem because the fuel trims are in line. Tomorrow he is going to try flashing the computer…and if that doesn’t work…he is going to try running it with a new computer and see if that solves the problem. All suggestions are welcome.

I've read that some people with LT's - especially if they disable their rear sensors and completely remove them - move the rears to the front. Something about the specs on the rear allowing for quicker response time.

It also sounds like a general tuning issue - all my MIL's/Codes were always related to the rear sensors fussing.

Personally I'd button up the car as it sits, find a tuner somewhere and get some custom tune time on a dyno. Not only do I suspect your codes would clear up, but you'll optimize your setup much better.

I doubt it's ther LT's, I bet the Halltech is leaking air. That usually throws codes.

Howdy!

I would listen to 95Jersey's comment above - if there are any leaks in the intake (especially +after+ the MAF), the metered airflow reading will jive with what the 1st 02's report.

I don't remember the codes in particular, but I know they're related to what your seeing, and people have solved this by checking (and finding) leaks on the intake side - *especially* with aftermarket filters/intakes/bridges/etc.

Thanks for all of the responses....This problem is getting ridiculous. My car has been in the shop for three weeks. They have Checked for exhaust leaks, changed the 02 sensors three times, checked for intake leaks, checked the grounds for the 02 sensors, reflashed the computer, replaced the computer, replaced the MAF, drained and refilled the fuel tank.....And the dam CEL still comes on. I hate to think that my car could be totaled because of a CEL.... GM said that I may have to remove the aftermarket headers before they can fix this. That seems extreme to me.

Not sure on this but.....
Before removing the headers they could use the Tech II and delete the O2 sensors completely...wouldn't this then rule out the headers/O2 if the CEL keeps coming on??

I believe that they can shut off the back 02s....but the car needs the front sensors to opperate properly.
