I keep getting a recurring C1281 code. I can clear the codes and it'll pop up the next time I drive the car. The tech tips say that this is a steering sensor malfunction. My car is a 99 and does not have active handling so why would I need a steering sensor? If I don't need it, can I quell the message somehow so that it doesn't pop up each time I drive? If I *do* need the steering sensor, then I'm going to need even more help because I intend to replace the sensor myself... so anyone have the procedure for replacing it?
Just because you don't have AH doesn't matter. You do have MagnaSteer. In the manual there are two diagnostic tables. One for no AH and one with AH. The manual is way too detailed to go into here, but a dealer with a Scan Tool will be able to help.
Common problem, replace the steering position sensor...The sensor is at the base of the column and requires removing the column to replace...Not as bad as it sounds ;)
Ok. Could someone post some instructions on how to remove the steering column to replace the steering sensor? Maybe someone could scan a page from a Helms or something? I need to get this fixed and don't have time to order and wait for a manual.
Someone please help me with the procedure because I definitely want to do it myself! The only GM dealers within 20 miles of here are filled with rednecks that only know how to work on pickup trucks! :smash: If I walk in there, that'll be the end of my (so far positive) C5 experience!
