When I go over a sizeable mound in the road, kind of like doing a jump but not becoming airborne, my suspension goes to it's limit of travel in the rear and I hear and feel a kind of clunk! Is this just the suspension stopping at it's extended limit?
i dont know how big of a bump you are referring to here but there was a thread about a clunk in the rear. do a search on frame and look for the thread saying. "frames cracked and not covered" dont go into an anxiaty attack. just look for that thread and read it. there on some models is a small piece of weld that comes loose and needs to be rewelded together. the guy who started the thread, his turned out to be a sway bar loose.
It's not a bump I am talking about. My 01 takes bumps fine. This is when say you go over a hill and then the road drops down very quick and the suspension springs down and bottoms out in the extended position.
these are stiff springs. i cant see it bottoming out that way. there is lots of travel when lifting the the car. the wheels will drop a long way. but the travel up is very limited by the spring. i jacked my car up last night to put it on stands and did so by the front jack puck. after a few pumps on the jack the rear lifted also on that side. the opposite rear to the front i was jacking didnt squish down hardly at all. i cant see it bottoming out from a woopty woo in the road. the front i have done this to. but it is the cross member/air dam hitting not the suspension bumpers. i still think its the shocks/sway bar bushings or something like that loose and clunking. did you search the tech forum for the thread i told you about? it was just yesterday or the day before i seen this.
I did see that post when it was up on the 1st page. I don't think that is the problem. I am not so worried about it. I do believe it is what I think. I was just curious if anyone else had experienced the same thing.
Thanks!
You know that I dont mean bottoming out in the compressed way, but fully extended with the wheels as far away from the chassis as they will go.
My coupe is an 01 6 spd. with 35000 miles on it. I dont know about the exaust being loose or not. I have had the car about a year and a half and I have felt this maybe 3 or 4 times. It's more of a feeling than an audible sound, at least from inside the car. I should get undeneath and start looking around.

I was thinking a loose exhaust mount, whenever the rear of the car moves up and down the muffler could be bumping something.....

If you have the base suspension, (FE1), it may be possible that the suspension is bottoming out on the jounce bumper. In fact, the 2002 Z06 jounce bumpers were shortened to prevent bottoming out, this greatly upsets the geometry of the suspension. Ususally not a permanent upset, just during the event. The jounce bumpers are there to help reduce the shock load from bottoming out when encountering large excursions of suspension travel. The dynamics of a vehicle traveling at high speed over a crown, getting light or even off the pavement may exceed the spring rate and shock compression dampening design of the less stout suspensions.

I have the suspension package, I think it is the F45 option. I will get under on my days off and see if I can find anything. The exhaust could be something. I do have aftermarket mufflers on the car.
