Default Post deployment woes... Fuel pump noise.

Aloha folks... Have another question(s), more post-deployment problems

Just started getting a low to medium pitch humming from somewhere aft of the seat. It's still quite soft but noticeable from time-to-time at low RPM cruise & idle (reminds be of a hearing test tone). After searching this forum and reading a few posts I'm betting it's the fuel pump. The car sat for a good month without being driven so I'm still wondering if a clogged fuel filter maybe a possible cause as well. So...

Is there anyway to check the filter? Will the fuel pump shell-out soon after the humming starts? Is a fuel pump swap user level maintenance or something best left to a dealer?

Sadly this is the second problem I’ve had with the car… A window leak before I deployed (now fixed… Still cleaning the mess left by the dealership), and now this. When it rains it pours sometimes! Ahh, guess it could be worse (as I knock on wood )

TIA & Mahalo!!!

Welcome back from deployment!!! Brother Navy guy Retired FTCS (SS) (after 26 active duty) here for ya!!

I too have a Z06. Once I saw Back from "DEPLOYMENT" I knew you were Navy!!

I will try to answer you post the best I can:

As for the fuel pump, 97 & 98 C5 fuel pumps were known to be noisy. They were replaced "if the customer complained" with 99 year or newer pumps which were quieter. So,, I would have to say that if your pump is making noise, it could be suspect. Open the fuel cap and listen. If the pump is loud, or abnormally noisy that will let you hear it better. The noise that the pump normally makes is not as much of a tone as it is a low pitched HUM.

Try this: When you first turn on the key, the fuel pump will run for 5-8 seconds and then stop. It stops once the fuel pump charges up the fuel lines. Once the engine starts, the pump runs continuously until you shut off the key. If you turn on the key and hear the noise when the pump runs but the noise stops when the pump stops, you have found it!!!! If the noise continues to happen once the fuel pump stops, we have more digging to do!

The fuel filter is an easy repair but a bit on the pricey side. Your fuel filter "SHOULD" be good for 30-50000 miles before it needs changed, unless you are getting crap fuel. It is a doable repair but you will need to get the car in the air (hobby Shop Garage) and will need to purchase the tool to release the spring inside the fuel line cap that attachés to the filter.

Replacing a fuel pump isn't too difficult but, you will not be able to do it at the hobby shop. Even changing a fuel filter there will give them heart burn!! So don't tell them your changing it. Just do it!

If your hearing a tone, could it be coming from the speakers???? There have been a few cases where the speakers emitted a noise even though the stereo was OFF! The button for the drivers adjustable seat can also stick and cause the seat to continuously try to adjust.

Those are a couple of ideas. Let me know if you need any more info!

Thanks for serving!

Big Mahalo Bill, appreciate the help & kind words

I did all the checks you mentioned and now believe its speaker related... I actually heard the fuel pump and the tone I posted about sounds nothing like it. In fact it isn't as noticeable now, go figure

I'll keep an eye on the gauges for the next few weeks to see if anything starts going wrong.

Thanks again for the help!!!

Mark

PS... I'm actually a full-time air guardsman but was part of the Department of the Navy of so many years ago (read US Marine)
