Default Vortex Rammer Vs. Halltech Stinger

I currently have a Halltech Stinger w/ cold air mod in my 02 Z. I've had it on for 10 months now, and it's been great. Except after installing my Check Engine light kept coming on and off. But the cold air mod and dyno tune fixed that. But the cold air mod allows a lot more dust into the engine compartment. I just dressed up the engine compartment with painted and carbon fiber pieces. So eliminating any excess cleaning would be nice. And it looks like the Vortex Rammer would take care of that. Since it's sealed over a whole cut in the radiator cover. instead of an open whole under the Warhead Filter.

But, is there gonna any problems switching intakes, since i had the car tuned with the Halltech on there? And is the Rammer a good intake overall? Thanks!

You should be fine switching. You're not doing anything different in regards to allowing or preventing air by going to the Vortech.

On another note, why not fashion your OWN 3-sided box around the Halltech Warhead element? That might be even better, since you already cut the shroud below the Warhead. You can probably use Clear Lexan available from Home Depot with some silicone sealant, or have something made at a place like TAP Plastics.

Just thoughts.

that might be worth a try. That Warhead is a huge filter. Just depends on how much clearance i'll have between the hood and filter. Thanks for your input.

I've been toying with idea of doing DAVE68's cold air mod, too, but I don't like the idea of the outside air coming into the engine compartment, either.

I also thought about modifying the fog light bezels, too, but I don't want to get new dirt in the engine area from that mod, either. Plus, I think the air coming in from the fog light area is not nearly as efficient as some people think it is. DAVE68's mod is much more practical.

But, now that you started this thread, I'm thinking of making a box myself. I know the Warhead is huge, but in my setup, the shroud has not been cut, so I'm getting no air from the bottom of the Warhead. So, I would think you don't really need the top of the filter to be open, because you're getting air from the bottom already. Thus, a low-profile box will probably work fine. Since you already have a cut shroud, you're in a better position to experiment than I am.

But, don't forget to keep me posted if you decide to try some things out, so I don't have to do the "discovering" myself!

I love my VORTEK and my engine bay seems to stay pretty clean even in the polen seasons. Good luck on whatever you choose to do.

You have the clear plastic box over your filter, and a cut shroud, right?

If we were to try and make boxes for our Halltechs, is there anything special you think we should know about the design of the Vortech box that might make our endeavors easier? Or, is the design pretty much as simple as a 3-sided box around the filter element?

Cover your shroud or replace it.

Then get the additional bridge to convert your Stinger to a TRAP

Yes, I have the clear plastic shourd. The HALLTECH's filter is pretty large, but I think fabricating a cover could be down easily. Besides the plastic cover, you may want to invest in some weather stripping (foam stuff with the sticky side - can be bougth at home depot or lowes) to make sure you have a good seal to ensure that air does pass by.

I got a video install file of the Trap, so now I know how the bridge looks under the hood. But, the video fails to show how the element works in the setup. I assume you put it in through the license plate cutout? And, there's no box then, either? I mean, the bridge runs down into the bumper area and attaches to the element, right? And you simply have air coming in through the license plate area, where the element is in the air path? Is that how it works? So air basically rushes into the engine compartment? How does that work in the rain, then? Wouldn't water just soak the element?

Thanks.

The filter just connects to the duct that reaches down to the cavity behind the bumper and in front of the shrowd.

There is a licence plate area mod that allows air to direct hit the filter.

I just removed the fog shrowds and PLENTY of air gets in.

When it is raining I put some duct tape over the fog shrowd area.
