there are no how-tos for the short side, however I am making one.

You can ask me what you like. The short side is very difficult compared to the long side, you will NEED a press to do the installation, and you will NEED experience on rebuilding drivetrains. You also will NEED a long output shaft gear for this, as the stock short side is a single piece.. so a new gear entirely is required from another diff, GM doesn't sell them no matter the price. You will have to remove the carrier from the diff, unbolt the carrier and seperate into 2 pieces, pull the short side shaft out of the clutches, then you will need to press out the pin holding teh spider gears in, remove the spider gears to free up the short side, pull it out, get your new short side hardened shaft and press on the gear, then C-clip and press back against the clip for clearance. Then, you will need to drop the short shaft back into the carrier, and it gets tricky. Use a shaft on the corner of the short shaft gear and press down to collapse the washer. while it is pressed down you must insert the spider gears, and the holding pin, press the pin in and make sure the spider gears align as well as the 2 bolt holes for the carrier on each side... release pressure and you should be in business.

I assume you have done mechanical work if your asking how to swap the gear/shaft. With that assumption, swapping the gear/shaft is a piece of cake. Once you remove the rear:
Remove the cover
Remove the stud mount inside
Remove the Diff
Unbolt the 12 diff bolts
Take diff apart
*** Depending on year you may have to remove the ring gear to remove the center pin
Remove the center pin and spider gears/shims

Once that is done the gear/output shaft will come out. Transfer the clutch packs over and complete R & R.

The long out shaft gear, is that the one that Dyno Tech says he has for $249?
