I came across a set of Corsa exhaust for a very reasonable price but am not sure of the install. They are a catback system without any crossover pipe, what is a catback system and can they be attached to my existing exhaust (year 1999), also do I need gaskset, clamps to join the two. I had mufflers from a 02 installed by a exhaust shop 2 years ago and was thinking of doing this myself but am not sure what I might be getting into.
Hi,
The cat-back system connects after the catalytic converters. They replcae the 'over the axel' pipes, the mufflers and the tail pipes. They connect to the exhaust system the use of flanges, and IMHO, getting new gaskets for these flange joints is always a smart thing to do. Aftermarket systems are made to last, so the joints between the components of the exhaust plumbing tend to be the first to fail. It is therefore smart, that if you are replacing a section of the exhaust system, spending a little extra cash ($20) on new gaskets is warranted.
The change out is pretty simple, but a lift makes the job a LOT easier. Some muffler shops will do it for you and depending on where you live, expect tp pay between $50 and $100 for them to do it.

If you do it yourself you will need to drop the rear swaybar down to give you more room to move the system in and out. All that has to be done on the swaybar is to take the 4 bolts out of the center section where it attaches to the frame and it will pull down out of the way. The exhaust is held in place by 4 bolts , 2 on either side exhaust, and 4 more , 2 each side, to hold it up at the rear of the car near the mufflers. Have fun.
