Default Leaking differential left side round 2!

This really stinks. I had the car in the shop last month to fix this problem and here it is again. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? It started leaking about two days ago. There is two spots on the garage floor about the size of a fifty cent piece. The car is beginning to spend a lot of time at the dealership for this.

I don't know your dealer, but did they actually do the repair???
We just had ours done 3 weeks ago. I inspected their work and it has been fine.
I do all my own repairs, but this is a warranty item!!
So far so good.........
Take yours back again. They should replace both the seal & o-ring if they didn't.
Tell them to fix it................Again till it is right.:boxing

One of the forum techs has posted that an anaerobic sealer (GM #105942 or Loctite #51813) should be used in addition to the new gasket, otherwise the leak may return. Mine is at the dealer even as we speak, getting the same repair. I told them to use the sealer, we will see.....

Yeah, I told them about the sealer last time and even printed out a post from the forum for them to refer to at their request. I really did not want to make them mad by having information and not letting them have access to it. They said they did it just like the post, but if the proof is in the pudding I really doubt it if they did. I wish they could get it fixed. At any rate, I called them this morning and they will do it again Friday am. I am keeping my fingers crossed. I have only put about 2k miles on the car since the last encounter with the dealer.

And you really have something with did they fix it the first time or just clean up the mess allthrotle&nobottle!

Thanks.

Congratulations! You are now a member of the Multiple Diff Leak Club. I'm currently on my second seal replacement. See the sig. I also tried to provide information from the Forum to the service writer on both repair occasions. I got the "We know what we're doing treatment". No evidence that they applied the advice that I gave them. Both times they only replaced the seal, not the O-ring. I'm starting to smell that telltale odor of diff oil burning off the exhaust again. I haven't checked for drips yet, but I expect It'll be leaking again. This time I'll open an official complaint with Chevrolet Customer Care and stick it in the services manager's face. This dealer hands out cards indicating how to mark the customer satisfaction surveys (all marked completely satisfied of course) that sometimes follow service. And this is one of the better dealers around! I think they are just following the procedure provided by GM.

C5Fun which Dealer did you go to I have this problem but have been putting it off because I hate to bring the car into the dealer. I had a 98 CPE that did the same thing and the boneheads at Irvine took 3 wks and several visits to cure. They are truly the worst on the planet. I have a 2001 vert with 11K and have been able to avoid the dealer up till now.

C5 TECH repaired mine months ago and it has not leaked again. He used the GM Lubricant # 1052358.

Well they ordered the parts. They are supposed to call me when they can install them. They told me it was just a small leak and sort of smiled. I offered them the chore of cleaning the floor of my garage. I want the floor to stay clean so I can see what this baby is doing. As far as I am concerned any leak is a big leak.

This stinks!

I will not take my car to the dealer!I had this same problem at 4K (2000 FRC)I simply sprayed the entire left side of the diff. with brake cleaner, then went for a short 5 mile run, inspected the area and found a drop hanging from the very bottom of the left side diff. cover. Some of you may not approve of the way I "fixed"the problem.I applied a slightly thick layer of Permatex gasket sealer along the edge where the the left side diff. cover bolts on.I let it dry overnight then took another 5 mile drive. When I returned I felt a little lube on the repair.I sprayed it with brake cleaner again and applied considerably more permatex. That was 1500 miles ago.No more leaks.I bought a new Harley shovelhead in 1982 that had small area on the crankcase that was porous that I used the same Rube Goldberg technique on,and it never leaked a drop again.Save yourself some grief, try this first! :yesnod:

I have a 2K coupe, and the dealer originally said it was the diff seal, but when they got into it, they found the diff casting had porosity and they replaced my entire diff. No more leaks here.....so far.
Good luck, Robi

I have had my left seal replaced three (3) times and it just started leaking again! :mad

I'm getting tired of this! I will have to check and see if they had also replaced the o-ring and used the anaerobic sealer, as well as look for a porous diff case.

Anybody know or try to have the dealer swap a diff on warranty and upgrade to a 3.73 with you paying the DIFFerence?

My car goes in the shop Wednesday. If they don't fix it this time I am going to ask them to replace it. My wife has a Mustang and it has never been in the shop AT ALL!

I had the problem back in Sept. 1999 at 4,000 mi. The dealer was instructed by the factory to replace the diff. I think this was one of the first to occur since the factory wanted to take it apart and investigate. Took 3 days to get the car back.

Never had the problem again and I now have 31,000 mi.

Mine is in the shop right now, I talked to the engineer who works with differentials at Carlisle this weekend and expressed my concerns about recurring leaks and asked him about using sealer during the repair. In my opinion his response was very vague and non-committal. He acted as if sealent wasn't necessary (I told the dealership who is fixing mine to use the sealant). He didn't even acknowledge that a problem existed after I told him how many poeple I knew who had the problem.

Typical corporate customer bend over and grab your ankles attitude :mad :mad :mad ! Remember, this is the same bunch who unleashed the Vega and the gasoline engine that was converted into a diesel engine on it's customers! THANKS GM !!!!
