Ok, my girlfriend has a 1999 Corvette. Car has approx. 93,000 miles on it. About 2 weeks ago she was coming home and her gauges all died and went she pulled in the garage and turned car off, it would not crank back up. So, I put the charger on it and it eventually cranked. I ran fine for about 2 days, and then it did it all over again. Took it to local dealership, they supposedly checked everything and found NOTHING!!!! The only thing they pointed out was it looks like some acid from a previous battery could have leaked down on computer. But that has been like that since we purchased car 2 years ago. The battery is only about 4 months old. Anyway, I took car to auto zone to get them to check alternator (checked out fine), checked battery (checked out fine), they checked a couple of other things and everything checked out fine. Guy at AZ said he didin't have a clue as to what it could be. So car ran fine for a few more days, and 2 nights ago she was on her way home, gauges died and then car died, but she did make it to the median.
So, I go find her, here is what I don't understand-----I jumped her car off, you could rev it up for a little bit, then gauges would go out and you couldn't rev car any, and it would begin to idle VERY ROUGH almost like there was a LOT of water in the gas. And then DIE!!!!
Sorry for so long, but ANY AND ALL HELP WILL BE GREATLYYYYYYY APPRECIATED. I am at a loss!!!
If some acid has leaked, it is possible that the main battery ground is corroded. Take out the battery to giv eyo some working room. Then take out the battery surround, the main ground is located on the frame (hidden under the surround) at the front end of the battery o the engine compartment side ( negative terminal side)
IF it looks corroded, use a dremel tool or fine sandpaper ( emery cloth) and clean off the corrosion.
THe ground is an eylet type. There is a nut on top tightened to a bolt running into the frame. Clean off the bolt if necessary and once clean, coat all with a dielectric grease to prevent re-occurence.
See if that is your problem.
Turn the ignition to ON without the engine running and check "B+" on the engine fuse block or the voltage at the battery terminals. Then look at the voltmeter on the dash. Are the readings about the same? Is the needle jumping?
Do you notice some interior lights are dim/off when they normally should be on?
My 98 had a problem a lot like this....bat and alt checked fine but was still having problems.....traced the alternator wire out and found out that the wire that comes off the back of the alternator goes to the starter terminal where the positive from the batt hooks up....took the wires off the starter terminal(seamed a little lose when I first went to remove the nut) and wire brushed every thing clean...hooked them back up made sure the nut was tight and have not had any problems since.
