Need to change a water pump for a friend on a 98 LS1. I have to take a trip to service the car and I need to ask a question before I start the task.
How the hell do you get that pully off??????????????????
I have remove 4-5 LS1 pumps but never have had to service the pump, just reinstall it.
Any special tools needed to remove the pully or funky left handed threads that I need to know about?
I just want to whack this water pump problem out and be done with it. Dont need to work on it all day cause I'm not prepaired!
Thanks for letting me ask the dumb question of the day!
Bill, I hope this isn't a dumb answer. I just ordered a new pump for my '99 and the pulley comes with it as well as the thermostat and housing. I haven't installed mine yet but my guess is the pulley is pressed on and you just toss it with the old pump. I bought a new Delco on the net for $170 delivered. To bad the hood is where it is for the installation but it doesn't look too tough. Some say cleaning the gaskets off takes as long as the rest of the job. Best of luck!
Yup, come "part of assembly". Although yours has the 4 bolts to remove the pulley, later ones dont.
Also, get a later model style pump as there are some flow differences.
And, don't forget you can use the good late model alum carrier/rubber gaskets. The hell with the paper composite ones
Ahhhh!! I was looking at the pump pulley on my 02 Z and could NOT see any holes to mount a puller to! Now I see why!!!! I sure hope that the new pump comes with a pulley! The C5 that I'm going to be working on is a 98.
I agree on the simplicity of the job. I had ENGLANDGREENS pump off three times. Only takes a few minutes. I was just worried about that damn pulley!
I tried to call Auto zone to see if they could give me a definitive answer on whether the Re manufactured pump comes with the pulley. The guy didn't have a clue! Its a Cardonoe re-manufactured pump. Any body ever use one of those pumps???
I'll bet you if it is a pressed on pulley there is a 99.9% chance that the pulley is included with the pump. Otherwise, 37.1% of the people would crush the pump trying to change the pulley with a hammer and the other 62.8% of the "professionals" at the shops and dealers would crush the pump in their press!
All the pressfit pumps will come with the pulley. I have yet to see one that hasn't. Which includes the cardone unit, gm direct, eastern industries etc.
Not to mention there is no way to remove that pulley and trying to press and new pulley on I would almost gaurantee somebody would push the shaft out the back of the pump housing.
just put a new one on mine, it comes as part of the pump cost was about 175, not cheap but it comes with a thermostat and the not ment to be rmv'd pulley for the pump, pumps after 98 are the not rmv'able type.
I didn't answer because I didn't want to sound stupid... but I was thinking it had to come with it....and you made me search the forum trying to find out
Well here is the results! The pump change out went flawlessly!!!!
It is very straight forward and only took a few hours. Most of the time was spent removing those G^% D#%$ paper gaskets!!!!
Man,,,what a pain in the ***** that was!!! Once the gaskets were removed from the block with razor blades, the rest of the install was a piece of cake! If you ever do this repair, GET THE NEWER METAL GASKETS!!

Thanks a MILLION for the pictures of the pumps!!! That really put my mind at ease! When I was using my 02 as an example, I started to expect the worse!!!
My old 98 is back on the road as good as new!! My buddy Steve & Ellen are again enjoying CORVETTE life!!!
Excellent photos! The only minor correction is that the newer pressed on pulleys along with the aluminum carrier gaskets started in '99. The older paper gaskets have long since been discontinued by GM too.(thank God )

On early C5, the water pump does not come with the pulley, you need to swap it. And if you have an early C5, put the metal gasket. It takes longer to scrape the old paper gasket than replacing the pump...
Ok what I wanted to say is that the metal gasket part number is 10276792.
