When I turn the wheel sharp, to make a uturn for example, it sounds almost like something is grinding, or rubbing. I can't tell if the sound is coming from the front wheels or from under the hood somewhere. Sometimes I can hear it a little even when it's not a very sharp turn...kind of like a faint grinding/clicking/rubbing sound.
Has anyone had this problem? I just bought the car (auto, '00)...maybe it needs new power steering fluid? The car has not been lowered or anything...It's bugging me
The wheel hub assembles can and do go bad. They will show their wear when you stress them during a turn. You can jack up the car on all four corners and check all four hubs for excessive wear. place your hands at the 12 O clock and 6 O clock position on the tire and wiggle the wheel inward and outward. There should be little or no lost motion in the bearing! If there is excessive wear, you will have a lot of slop and the bearing may even feel rough if you rotate the hub with the tire removed.
If the bearing is bad, just replace it. it is a simple task!
As strange as this sounds, I found the edge of the wheel made contact with the wire that went to the speed sensor on both front wheels when turned sharply. The wire was incorrectly looped to the outside of the shock by the techs at a GM dealership when they replaced the front rotors.
It used to throw a speed sensor code every once-in-a-while, but not once since I spent two minutes routing the wires properly and cleaning the contacts.
