Transmission High Temperature?

Transmission High Temperature?
My son just called and said his 2001 coupe just popped and error message on the DIC that said " High Transmisison Temperature"?? He had only been driving the car for severaL miles this morning and the temps here are still quite cool. What might be the problem?? I have a M6 so I'm no help to him.

Mine came on 2 years ago at around 37000 miles. The next day I lost 2nd gear and eventually had the whole transmission replaced under warranty. Heat is the killer of the A4. It will fry your transmission quickly. A lot of the members have aftermarket trans coolers, especially here in the South. Hope everything is ok. The 2-3 clutch-paks are probably worn out or on the downward slide. High temps are associated with this. Eventually you will lose 2nd or 3rd gear. If its under warranty insist on a complete new trans. Replacing the clutch paks is just a band-aid fix. I went through this nightmare for about 3 month and finally got a new one after all the bandaid fixes at the dealership

My son just called called the car will not shift into 3rd or 4th. No current codes are showing .... (doesn't make since with a warning)?? Old code was a U1064H..that's all. Sure hope his tranny isn't ruined since it is just out of warranty.

Same deal I went through, Clutch paks are gone, Get the whole thing totally rebuilt. They have to tear it apart anyway.. If its out of warranty get Rodney to build it for you. He has an excellent reputation on this forum. It will be bullet proof.

The warning message about tranny temps will trigger when the tranny hits 260 degrees. If it is hitting that temp during normal driving, obviously something is wrong. The 1064 code is just a normal communication link code. Ignore it.
Since there are issues shifting from 3-4, better take it to get checked out. As most are saying, probably the clutch packs. It must have been
driven hard for the tranny to lose it after 5 years!

Well cars in the shop...think the dealer may have suckered him in telling him they think it is just a sensor (sensor wouldn't keep it from shifting would it). We'll see how it shakes out today.

What Is the Normal Transmission Temp?
I just bought a 1999 (A4) with 75,000 miles. On a cool (70 degrees) morning it runs on the freeway at 170 (transmission temp) and goes to 195 in moderate traffic. What are the normal operating temperatures for the transmission? Also, I need to take it in and have the fluid replaced. Any recommendations for fluid? This is a daily driver, not driven 'hard'.

My 02 (A4) runs at almost the same temps as yours. I have seen it a 203* once when I was pushing hard. It runs anywhere from 150* to 190* depending on type of traffic conditions. Highway cruising is normally 165*.
I did my filter change and 4.5 qts. of Royal Purple over the winter.

check the level of the fluid! if its low, the temps will go up pretty damn quick!!! otherwise, yea, what these guys are saying, clutch packs are done for.... good luck! And rodney (crashed94) does great work!!!

I whud suggest cleaning the radiator.You know that thing is like a vacuum.I guess you could start by checking the water temp.& if it is just alittle high,id chg the thermo also.I got one of those codes about 2 years ago & thats what i did.Still runs fine .....

Funny how things come up!! I was on my way to LG this weekend for headers and cam and mine did the same thing!!
Needless to say, I am pretty disappointed. In case it is fried, how much for a tranny rebuild? Just a ballpark, and how long does it take Rodney (or anyone) to do one?J.

axikowboy: my tranny didn't blow. i just lot 8qts of fluid... and then it just stopped working. filled more fluid, works like a charm. i dunno how much or how long it takes Rodney to build a trans... might want to pm him!
