The Vortex Ram Air installation on my '98 coupe left the air injector pump hose hanging in space. This hose normally picks up filtered air from the plenum on the factory intake box and probably needs to be clean. It is probably being ****, but I really thought a filter on this thing was needed. I found one at O'Reilly Auto Parts. It's maybe 2 1/2" in diameter and 2" or so tall. It has a rubber fitting that is a good friction fit to the inside of the air pump hose, and also has a clamp. It is available in chrome, red, blue, and maybe other colors. They may have discontinued them because the list on it is $22 or $23 and I got it for $12. I reamed some of the rubber from the inside of the fitting on the filter in case there might be flow issues, but haven't had any problems or codes yet.
Didn't it come with a little foam filter thingy? I just used that.
Either way, it's probably good to have something there... don't want to suck up any bugs or butts, or bug butts
It probably did and the guy who owned the car when the unit was installed didn't know what it was, probably thought it was packing material and threw it away.
I looked in the hose and it wasn't there, wasn't sure what to use so went on a quest for a filter. And I guess even if the foam was in the tube, for $12 I'd take it out and put this filter on because it just looks more finished.
When you stuck the filter on the hose, did you leave then end in the engine compartment or under the shroud in the filter area? This was my only question on the install, it was actually quite easy.
I left the filter in the engine compartment since I didn't think it would make any difference if the air were cool or warm. I haven't had a problem at all with the installation, no codes, etc., so think all is okay.
I'm just stating overall with the vortex as compared to the original stock airbox. Its like a completely different car, I wasn't expecting huge gains. The filter element is kind of small, so theres not much surface area.
Did you by chance remove the screen btwn. the bellows and the (motor) intake? (looks like the lid of a tin can covered with tiny holes) I had considered it, but was told that turbulent air might cause some unwanted codes / decrease in performance.
