Default Need a code scanner

I was vaguely aware the C5 was a sophisticated machine, but dayum. I just got my Helm manual and just the section on HVAC is bigger than the ENTIRE factory manual on my first Corvette, a '56.

All that said, with several hundred (thousand?) different codes and the way the manual forces diagnostic repair, I'm going to need a scan tool.

I'd appreciate recommendations from any or all reading this forum as to which brand is better (if one is indeed better) and what the price on one of these bad boys ought to be.

is different from the reader. The Helm manual specifically mentions a code scanner that is used not only to display codes, but to communicate with the computer and to cause things to happen to test circuits.

I wish it WERE that simple!

There are many different diagnostic scanners out there but if the service manual tells you to hook up the scan tool, they are referring to a Tech II.

This is not necessary for the everyday guy working in his garage, all thats required to troubleshoot most problems in the service manual are good troubleshooting skills and your own interpretation of the troubleshooting tree in each section as well as a basic understanding of how each system works.

I own a Snap-On scanner, their basic model not the MT2500 and it does everything that I need. I did alot of work on my last Corvette as well as work on a buddies Z06, I also do work on the side and I buy wrecks to rebuild and sell so I use my scanner alot.

What a Tech2 does is that it allows you to quickly test many components without taking things apart but that doesn’t mean that an old school approach to the problem won’t work. For most of the diagnostic steps in the chart there is an explanation in the text of the purpose of the step. Once you know the purpose of a diagnostic step you can often figure out an old school way of accomplishing the same thing.

If you want to get a Tech2, they cost about $3000 new. I happened to get a used one for $1400 and although that’s still a lot of money I use it on my Silverado as well as the C5. For me the time it saves is worth the money

The tech 2 is designed for our car, I just fixed my car last night with one. It's easy to use but very expensive. see if an auto zone has one they can lend you pull the code and do a self test if the code is testable.
