I was trying to figure out which Gremlin knocked my mirror off when it happened to me!!!! This is not a fun job, but can be done. Must use THIN, STRONG wire to leave enough room in there. I chose to do mine leaving the washer in place and sliding the pin across the top of it. It's worked so far, but it left so little room for the compression wires.

The link I was given on here for door panel removal is from Vette Essentials. Follow it and you should have no problems.

http://www.vetteessentials.com/instr...or_handle.html

Take the speaker out and it will help you get the wire retainers off; they hold the wires to the inside of the door. Pay close attention to the routing of the mirror wires because it's held up and away from the window when it's going up and down. The toughest part of the reinstall, as I recall (after fixing the mirror) was getting the wire clips back in place. Be careful pulling the clips out, too, so you don't break them. Make sure you use shrink tubing on the wire joints and I would recommend soldering them, too. They're in an area where they can get wet and the last thing you need is an area for electrical gremlins to start playing. Good luck!! It's a little tough, but when you complete the job and nurse the cuts on your hands and knuckles, you'll have a great feeling of job satisfaction and money in your wallet to spend on go-fast goodies!!

EDIT: Jochen cut the wires up in the housing, I cut mine below the entire unit which put the spices in an area less exposed to weather. I cut the black sheath in the same area then taped the sheath back together upon assembly, giving the splices extra protection. Please note that it IS a tight fit for the wires going through the "metal tube" once the pin is put in place. I might have even split the wires to either side of the pin, outside the black sheath, but I think I was able to feed the sheath-covered wires past the pin. If you need clarification, IM me....I'll try to check it for the next couple of days. Good luck.
