OK i got a low oil warning so eventhough the dic says i am at 50% oil life i am going to change it for the first time.
so, what kind of oil and filter do you guys think are the best.
and do the rhino ramps really work and what is procedure for getting on them safely (dont want to drive off them and hurt the vette)! :jester
I had a stock AC filter on when I bought my car and I went out and bought the Rino's and until I lowered my car it was easy to get the car on them.
Now I jack it up and set the car down on the ramps, I use Mobil-1 5W 30W (I always used to use heaver oil as I will never see low low outside temps) but I decided that they know what they are talking about (they=GM)
When I put in the Mobile 1 oil filter I had a bump of about 7 Lbs of Oil Pressure (not sure how many miles on AC filter when I bought the car)
I change my oil at 60-50% on the DIC anyway. I like the mobile 1 filter as the craftsmanship looks good. (clean threads of metal from them cutting them in)
Also don't forget to PRIME your oil filter!!!!! (fill it before you install it) and read up on the recommended trq. numbers on this filter. Thgis is the first one I have seen where it is this high as it is as best I can recall. Something like 35 ft lbs. BUT don't trust that number look it up. (my memory is not that good)
Buckmaster...for sliding rhino ramps...put a towel under each one....they'll stay put.
I don't use a torque wrench on the drain plug.
[forum meanie on] And if "Willa" reads this...see, people know the "blue button" is the oil filter and not the "oil release button" even when they're doing the 1st oil change  [forum meanie off]
Hey Bud! Hope all is going well. I'm amazed that you're only doing your first oil change. I've already done about 5. But then again, I change mine every 3,000 - I don't follow the DIC.
Ditto on the Delco Ultraguard UPF44 -local Pep Boys should have them if you're in a hurry, if not, order them through Ken Fitchner and save a few pennies. Best filter out there. Just note that you're oil pressure may change (up or down) from what you're used to - normal with this filter.
I also use Mobil 1 5W-40. The Rhino ramps work well. Agree with the towel for the keeping them from slipping. I also need to drive onto a 2x6 for under the back wheels to gain enough clearance for the jack to clear the cross-member. Sounds like a lot but really a cinch.
Look up in the tech tips for specific step-by-step instructions. If you can't find them, lt me know and I can fax you what I have. Good Luck!
Buckmaster...For the ramp slipping issue...
I cut two 2x4s 4ft. long and put one end against the front edge of ramp and the other end against the footing/foundation of my garage...works great...
no chance of slippage.
good to hear from you, actually i only have a lil over 3k on her, i only drive it on the wknds.
i do need those directions, just email them if you want to zeus337@prodigy.net
thanks,
hey i saw where you used 5w 40w vs. 5w 30w, just wondering if you had better results with it. also are there any tricks to using the rhinos and are they better than the traditional metal ramps?
thanks again for the directions
see you at cruise in!
First off I think he had a typo as Mobil 1 doe snot come in 5w-40w as best I can tell, anyway in answer to your question about Trq. Filter.. I did it by feel but the mere fact that this is the first car (alum block lots of expansion and contraction) that asks / tells you to Trq. the FILTER I thought I would get it right the first time I did, and Then I felt what that felt like with a oil filter wrench that fits on the filter like a big socket and my 6" ratchet, so now I mimic that feeling and I am SURE I am with-in a few lbs and then every time I am under the car (when I wash it I get under it ever other time) and check the filter tightness and before I found it LOTS loser then I would have thought it could get (this was when I first bought it and I did not do the install on that filter)
Zeus, I just did my first oil change yesterday morning with the help of a friend(mileage: 1,382 and DIC reading 79%, age of oil: 5 months). I used three 2"x12"s as front ramps (to allow me to get under the front end) and chocked the front wheels. After removing the drain plug I waited a good 15-20 minutes for it to drain and then I used my jack to lift the rear up so that my rear tires where at least above the ground equal to the height of the roughly six inches that I had lifted the front in order to get the rest of the oil out. Getting the filter off was a bit tough...they really torqued it on at the factory. My friend and I finally got it off and I just used the AC/Delco PF 44 and "hand tightened" it. I then filled her up with 6 and half quarts of Mobil One 5W-30 as per the owner's manual. Let her sit for about 10 minutes (to ensure that the oil had drained into the pan) and fired her up. I have been checking the oil (warm about 15-20 minutes sitting) and I've noticed that the 6 and half quarts does not bring the level up to the max mark (i.e. filling in the second hole in the dipstick). But it's fairly close to the Max mark (appears to be about a quarter quart shy of the Max mark. I've decided to wait to see if I need to add more. A lot of posters say that the 2001 takes 7 quarts vice 6 and a half to reach the Max level. I don't understand that, because I don't think there's a difference in the oil pan size from the '97-'00 models (at least GM hasn't said anything about it). But I will tell you that when I placed the drain oil (including the oil from the used filter) my oil disposal container displayed that I had drained a just a hair over 7 quarts from the engine. I also know that by the time I had about 1,100 miles on her, the second hole of the dipstick (Max line) was filled with oil...so I know that I had used some oil. All I can think of is that either the factory put in the 7 quarts of oil...or the dealer topped it off before I picked her up for delivery. It's somewhat of a mystery. Of course, they always say that it's better to underfill a bit than to overfill the crankcase.
