Default Climate control

Hello when I bought the car the guy told me the internal temp control was a bit messed up the tempature reading is in-correct it says 19 degrees outside, which it's not...so I cant use my AC...He had found a way to make the temp read 85 degrees outside so he could use the AC, but my battery died recently and that setting was reset, I was wondering if anyone here knew how to set the temp to a degree and let it stay that way so I dont have to go replacing things?? I just need air conditioning to work for a week atleast...while I drive around and can get my car worked on...

I just had this happen to me, mine was reading 19 also and negative numbers as well.

I disconnected the exterior temp sensor located under the passenger headlight. It was corroded. I cleaned it up, plugged it back together and then it read 69 so the a/c would work. I bought a new sensor ($10) yesterday, just need to put it on.

It's on the passenger side of the radiator cavity under the nose of the car above the air dam. If you look under the car you should see what looks like a grey pencil eraser sticking out on the side of the cavity.

To access it, raise the hood and reach down between the frame rail near the passenger headlight and the radiator cavity wall (below the air filter box). You should be able to see the connector down at the bottom of that area, and pull it out. Otherwise, you can access it from under the car by removing the access panel, but you'll need to get the nose up (ramps).

This problem is very common. The temp sensor will prevent the AC from coming on if it reports a temp below ~ 38*F. By unplugging it, the temp will default to ~68*F and allow the AC to work. Usually a low temp means a high resistance, which can be due to the sensor itself failing or corrosion in the connector.

I have the same problem on my 2000 C5 with 125,000 miles. I just replaced the sensor but still have the issue. I will disconnect for the ride home and try to clean when I get home.

Thanks for the tip.

Did this work for you or did you still have the problem after cleaning. I've replaced my sensor and looked for corrosion, but haven't found any. What else would cause this problem?

Would the bad ground be in the connector for the ait temp sensor or is there a ground location on the C5 that is notorious for corrosion or giving trouble?
