Default DTC C1286 Steering Sensor Bias Malfunction

Anyone know what to do to troubleshoot this DTC on my 98 m6 non-active handling?

Do some searches on the forum. Bretcutler asked this exact question less than a month ago. Lots or people responded with good troubleshooting tips.

Here's what I've found so far: DTC 1286
Steering Sensor Bias Malfunction

The EBTCM monitors sterring wheel position to compensate for steering/suspension wear. If a centering change is detected, the EBTCM changes the digital and analog center position.

If the centering routines change +/- 30 degrees bias value, or if the last IGN cycle bias value was out of range, a DTC sets.

Actions Taken
Magna Steer is disabled. ABS/TCS remains active.

Conditions for Clearing
Condition not present and scan tool clears DTC.
50 IGN cycles with NO DTC's detected.

Diagnostic Aids
Steering wheel rotated with steering gear disconnected.
Faulty sterring wheel position SENSOR.
Faulty EBTCM.

Repair/diagnosis requires scan tool and disabling the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (not recommended for DIY).

***************************

Usually this code indicates a bad Steering wheel position sensor or a sensor that needs to be re-calibrated because someone turned the steering wheel with it disconnected from the steering gear.

You have the last part right.. Unless you know for a fact the steering column was not un-bolted, 9 out of 10 times it's simply 360* out. You can hook up a DVM to the BCM output, rotate to correct and you are done. The fix for rotating the steering gear out-of-phase is "free", no "recalibration" necessary.

Well, I tried reading the voltage off the steering sensor by back probing the connection. I tried both the green and blue wires in the middle (information I gathered from other posts on the subject). I couldn't get a good reading from that, as readings would jump from 0 to 11.xx volts by turning the wheel 1/8". I just disconnected the wheel and rotated it 360* to the right, and reconnected. Seems to have fixed the problem, as the DTC has not returned.

Thanks Dan for the help.

Great news; the DTC should have re-appeared right away if it was still rotated out-of-phase, sounds like you fixed it.
