I bought the programmer and everything I see says that I should install this mod. I'd like to know what happens if I don't? I'm going to Kentucky next week and I don't think I am going to have time to pick one up, much less install it.
Will I get any good out of the Hypertech or should I wait until I have time to get the stat before I load the programmer?
I installed the Hypertech PP3 tuning without the 160 stat. I am actually planning on installing the stat today coincidentally.
Anyway, you can run without it. I've run without it for weeks now. You can still install the power tuning for high octane fuel, change shift firmness and lower the fan turn on temperatures. I say go for it. I've taken the car on a few 2 hour drives with no problems without the 160 stat. :seeya
You do not have to install the stat, Choose to edit the program instead of just slapping in the default program, and choose to either NOT change the fan on / off temps and or turn them on NEAR the stock setting, I don't recall the break points you have to choose from, But setting the fans to turn on below the stock stat is just stupid, as all you will do is run them and risk overheating them and or pre mature wear on them anyway. Just load everything else in the program that you want, I changed my shift "Firmness" by the choice of 100% (means stiffest shift possible by transmission,) and what a nice crisp shift I get now, I did not change the redline or shift points because of not wanting to run chance of hurting valve train for such minimal gains if any on unmodified engine (internally) :blueangel:
The stat is recommended in conjunction with the engine tuning to guard against detonation. If you're trip to KY is a road trip in the Vette, I would recommend (a) not installing the engine tuning, (b) using their fan control temps for the stock stat and (c) taking the programmer with you. The engine tuning is not exactly kind to your gas mileage and you wouldn't get that much benefit from it while you're on the road anyway. Or you could load it and drive and see what you think, you can always back it out.
I pretty much agree with the answers given. The detonation sensors on the new cars won't allow detonation anyway, you just won't get the benefits. I have installed one on my Tahoe (01) and my gas milage has not suffered at all. I would think any decrease would only be temporary anyway as the computer may go through a "re-learn".
I want to thank everyone for all the answers I got today. I broke down and ran to Corvettes of Houston at lunch (Extended) and bought the power stat anyway. I installed it tonight. Now if UPS would just get my Hypertech back to me. They misplaced it and loaded it on the wrong truck and now I will have to wait till Monday to try everything out.
The TwinFlow and the new PowerDuct seem to be working fine. The stats in and all I need is the PPIII and a few days off to play.
