Ok, so my ebay find (paid $102.50) Hurst shifter came in today. After a quick less than an hour install, my wife wanted to go to the grocery store.
"Brilliant!!!!!"
Sadly, it's only a couple mile round trip. My initial impressions that although not a lot shorter than stock, the throws are noticably shorter. I LOVE how precise it feels, although the newfound firmness it takes to get into each gear will take some getting used to. However, one thing I noticed that I do NOT like.
Directly WTF is that rattle in the shifter above about 2500 RPM?!?!?!?! THAT is going to be annoying quick. I thought it was the cap on the shifter **** but when I pressed my thumb down into it the rattle got LOUDER! Ex-pla-na-t-ion please?????
Oh yeah, my first ever Corvette is now officially modified. I managed to hold out for 18 days.
It's normal and has been posted about many times over the years. The rattle is basically driveline harmonics travel through the shifter arm and eminate out the ****. The **** acts like a speaker. The Hurst is a performance shifter and not dampened for noise. It's that simple.
But the good news is there are many things you can do the quiet it down and even eliminate it. The best solution for me was a solid billet **** with rubber grip bands (MGW) that absorbs most of the rattle. Electrical tape wrapped around the **** threads also help.
I kept the stock shifter **** because I put a home made switch under the shift pattern diagram for the air horns. It’s impossible to be shifting and blow the horn at some idiot while steering. This works great.
I had severe rattle with the Hurst and here’s how you fix it. The steel wedge that holds the **** doesn't fit the Hurst shifter lever, it's loose. Take the wedge out and peen it with a hammer so it fits tight on the shifter lever. No more rattles.
Thanks for the info guys. The steel wedge fit very tightly into the Hurst........so I'm not sure that's the issue. I'll do some playing around with it, maybe driving it down in through a piece of electrical tape or something. My rattling isn't too bad, but it's definitely noticable with heavier throttle input.

At least take a punch and drive the wedge in tighter.
My shifter **** is not loose, doesn't rotate and does NOT Rattle.
Mine was so bad, I drove with my hand on the shifter to stop the buzzing rattle.

The wedge shouldn't have to be used at all with the Hurst as it uses a screw on type ****. Mine certainly didn't. Also, a true Hurst rattle issue, only happens with heavier throttle inputs.
Uh, the tighter you drive that wedge in, the tougher it will be to get back out if you want to change shifter ***** sometime in the future. I whacked mine a good one when I put in my Hurst shifter and then when I wanted to change *****, I could NOT get that sucker out again. I had to take it to the dealer and let their tech take care of it for me. I don't know what he did, but he did get it out. I thought for certain I was going to have to drill it out.
It's funny, after I got done screwing the **** onto the hurst shaft, I thought to myself as I was driving the wedge in; "Do I REALLY need this wedge in here??" as I had bottomed the **** out and it was lined straight forward nice and tight.
Mine only rattles with heavier throttle inputs, but I'm going to tinker around with it anyway to see if I can't alleviate it some.
There have been several write-ups for solutions to the rattles. When I had the Hurst I use the 2" rubber pipe cap used for plumbing. You cut a hole in the middle and slip it snug over your shifter. It insulates the noise and can be bought at just about any hardware store.
I installed mine a couple weeks ago and love it. i taped off the stops so the shifter isnt doesnt bang against the screw everytime i shift gears. i never drove it without the tape so i cant really compare but mine doesnt rattle at all. hope this helps.
Well, impressions after the hour commute this morning:
I love it. Took almost no time to get used to it. Just a quick "snick" into each gear and I'm gone.
The rattling isn't too bad, I'm going to tinker around with it some as soon as I feel up to it. That pipe cap thing I'm going to take a look at seeing as how my stock shifter had a small rubber boot installed on it that stayed.
Some also have used stick on lead wheel weights, wrapped around the base of the shifter shaft. The weights help absorb the driveline harmonics. Again the Hurst shifter doesn't use noise dampening, so basically you have to create your own noise dampening.
