Default Breaking Rocker arms

Alright when one of my rocker arms broke on the drivers side about a year ago i thought it was a fluke. Now that I broke another one today I am realizing something is wrong. So after pulling the broken one I pulled one of the good ones out and realized that there might be too much play up and down in it. I think the bearings are just going out on all of them.

My car has MTI stage 2E LS1 heads, X1 cam (230/228 591/570 112), 7.4 inch hardened pushrods, and stock rockers.

The car is a 99 with about 88000 on it.

Should I be looking into shorter pushrods? Are rockers just a wear item that I didnt know about? Whats the deal

Thanks in advance

BTW, are LS1 rockers the same as LS6?

What were you doing when it broke? Did you miss a gear or over rev it doing a burnout? Have you checked the geometry of the valvetrain or P/V clearance? James

I was just driving when it broke, both times. Nothing harsh. I have had the heads/cam combo for about 25k miles now so I didnt figure the geometry is wrong with the valvetrain

There have been a reports of cammed cars having the rockers spit the bearings out due to the retainer clip breaking. Harland Sharp does a rebuild and replaces the Trunion bearings and installs new heavy duty clips that don't break. I think it's around $300 for the rebuild and it takes about a week.
BTW, if you spit the bearings make sure you account for all of them.

Check the oil pan. Do you have a magnetic oil plug? Also, you can try and pick up a strong magnet and drag it along the oil pan bottom and pull them to the oil drain hole. I think there are 33 needles in each side.

Pull your pushrods and make sure they are all equal length. Helped a friend install a cam in his LS6 the other day, one of the hardened pushrods was clearly shorter than the others, and it was marked 7.400 the same as the rest.

When you say broke, do you mean it spit bearings or the rocker itself broke into pieces?

The clip came off of one side and spit the bearings. I do have a magnetic plug and will try and magnet thing on the oil pan.

Thanks

I have had good luck doing the stick magnet. In yr case if you were not running it hard,i bet yo ucan find them.On other vette engine in my 57 bel-air,before i got smart & went to hydrolic cam;i retrieved part of my broken push rod thru the hole in the head unstead of pulling it down.I smile every time i see that pole magnet in my tool box.Funny thing i bought the mag.in one of those grab boxes in a parts store for 1.99.Getting back to yr problem.I whud change the oil & see how many you could account for.Theyre going to bottom of the pan esp.if youre operating the engine slow.Thats my take on the situation. Also after you change oil put in one of those mag plugs & run & chg it again...Good luck.....

it was a loud ticking noise as the rocker moved back and forth. As the revs would get about 2000 the exhaust would start to "sputter" a bit kinda like a diesel. No loss in power was felt though. It almost sounded like an exhaust leak but it was much louder ticking

Harland Sharp rebuild or just buy new GM unless you want to step into the dark side (aftermarket )

I bought the heads/cam/pushords straight from MTI and this is what they recommended. I would figure if the length was wrong that I would have had more problems. WIth almost 25k miles on this setup this is the second rocker to break. Should I be thinking about 7.35"?

Pushrod length is dependent on lifter preload and cam base circle, not lift.

One question though. Do you have 25k miles on your springs? And what kind are they? It may be time for a spring change.

yeah its time for a change in springs, it is on the list to do. I dont see how this would be the problem though since the springs themselves seem ok

I'm not saying it was the problem or even a contributor, just that it may be time to do it.
