I have a 98 that the pipe broke off near the mounting flange on the left side. I guess this is common?? How difficult is it to replace? What all do I need to do? I bought a pair of mufflers at a swap meet that were like new. Is their anything i can do to prevent this from happening again. Thanks
8 years out of a muffler system sounds pretty good but I am guessing it broke at the weld. If you kept that area clean or even painted it then it should hold up longer. These systems are so cheap to buy used though because people buy new catback systems and sell or junk the stockers. I have one in my attic that is only 4 months old in case I want to go back to completely stock. If I ever sell the car I will probably take the catback off and put the stoker back on.

The only two times my '98 was on a hook (flatbed ) were the two different times the pipes broke at the weld. (cheap crap ) Whatever G.M. replaced them with are much better and stronger. I agree with the previous post that you can buy used replacements cheap enough but inspect the welds to observe any stress cracks or porosity. If you're lucky to get warranty replacement ones you will be in good shape but I don't know how to tell the difference.
Thanks Craig. Has anyone install a new muffler? Is it pretty straight forward or is there anything I could do to make it easier? Thanks
Its pretty easy because its one piece bolt on if its stock. Trick is to get the car high enough to do it. A lot of people just take it to a muffler shop. Takes them about 1/2 hour so should not cost more than $50. Stick shif cars are easier than autos. You need to lower but not remove the rear sway bar. There are a couple how to's if you do a search. Aftermarket systems are a lot easier because they come in sections so you don't need to get the car as high off the ground to get over the rear and tranny.
