Default Fuel leak

Hi all:

Got my first real problem with the Vette. I know I've got a fuel leak (strong smell, distance to empty decreasing faster than it should be). I pulled over and couldn't spot the problem by pulling the engine covers, and there was nothing dripping underneath.
With some of the recurring problems Vette's have, is this another one? Is there a common place for these to leak? I'm thinking its in the fuel line somewhere since I parked it when I got home and the smell eventually went away (I'm thinking that the leak depressurized the lines).
Any insights would be great.

How you doing brother? Sorry to hear about your problem with the Vette! I remember a thread about a month back about a similar problem another forum member was having. Let me see if I can dig up the link for you. By the way, I haven't had a chance to take a pic of the old girl with the new shoes on her yet but they do look sweet...

EDIT:

Ok, did some research and there are a few common leakage points for the C5:

First is the fuel filter. It's located near the fuel filler neck area and tends to crack/leak/wear over time. Second is the fuel filler neck. Apparently the top where it joins the actual metal has a seal ring that also wears over time and can cause leakage. Third is the fuel cells themselves. There is a common cracking/leakage point at the "straddle" connector that joins the two tanks. And finally the thread I was referring to had a loose spark plug as the culprit. Apparently the fuel smell was coming from the area of a particular cylinder with no underhood leakage detected. GM tech traced it to loose sparkplug. I guess a lot depends on where your smell is coming from.....

I am having this issue, I know what mine is tho. it was 2 things the gas tank on the drivers side where the fuel pump comes out was leaking, and the very front injector 0 ring was leaking.

Good suggestions to look at. Steve, remember you can have the system pressure tested and that should eliminate injectors, fuel rail, and pump as possible leakage points. Hope this helps....

Default I can't believe you guys are awake!

At least I'm supposed to be working. Doesn't anyone sleep anymore! Thanks for the tips, I'm pretty sure I should be able to get a bead on this bugger this morning after some sleep. Someday (hopefully soon) I'll figure out the search function.

Glad the wheels worked out for ya, definitely send a couple of pics. I'll post the results of my efforts here as well in the hopes it helps someone else.

Thanks again guys...

Default Update

No leaks in the engine compartment. Checked all the injectors and the plugs (changed the plugs and wires while I was there), and nothing. One last thing I did before calling it a night was to press up the system and take a look underneath.

Not really surprised, but there's a steady drip coming from the center area, in front of the rear transaxle assembly. I thought the fuel filter was on the drivers side. Is there a fitting up between the two tanks?

Little help here would be great. Thanks again guys!

I believe this is where the "crossover" or "straddle" connector is located between the two tanks. This piece sits directly over the transaxle. Check for cracks or leakage there first.

Default Fuel leak - another update

Found the leak at the inlet to the fuel filter. Changing the filter solved the problem. One other question - the RANGE on my DIC (hold the jokes please) keeps decreasing, slightly more than I thought it would on my test drive. Could this be because it's figuring out that I lost a few cups of fuel during the filter change? There was no problem with the change, the strong gas smell is gone and there's no evidence of a leak now. Let me know what you think.

One more thing, I finally figured out how to use the search function, and used the directions found here to change the filter. The only difference was that I didn't need the fuel line disconnect tool. Both sides of the filter had the little blue clips. Hopefully this will help those with a '98.

Wife mentioned a decrease in gas mileage and an odor of gas this past friday. Sure enough there is a gas leak. Seems to be localized only on the driver's and to the rear.

Starting the troubleshooting process ...

Default Fuel filter

Changing the fuel filter on my 98 M6 wasn't too bad at all. I hear it can be a bear with the auto trans though... Good luck, let me know if I can help.
