A4 Shifter problem

I cannot shift out of park. The button can be depressed and it will not shift out of park either with the car started or in ACC mode. The car is on level ground in my drive. The car had started to be hard to shift out of park until it finally locked up completely. I need help!

Sorry this is on a 98 coupe.

Look under the brake pedal & follow it up behind the floor board to see that the brake switch is connected & making good contact.

I did check the switch and it seems like everything is fine. All the connections were okay.

Try tugging on the steering wheel. If you stopped it hard against a pawl it may be rubbing still against it

I have tried that and also rocking the car forward and back to see if there was pressure against a pawl or lock. The steering will turn with no trouble. The shifter button will not go down all the way when pushed as if something is holding it.
