My 98 (41K, AT) makes a "whining" noise under the hood after starting that goes away after about 30 seconds. It does this with car in park or in gear. It isn't loud, but is noticeable. It also sometimes comes back for a few seconds when stopped. It sounds like a motor or solenoid. Someone who heard it said they thought it was a pump associated with the anti-lock braking system and nothing to worry about. He said most cars have this pump that runs after starting and cycles on and off from time to time but you usually don't hear it. There are no codes or indicators showing any problems.
Should I be worried? Anybody had experience with this?
It might be the air pump,Its on the driver's side, kind of behind the front blinker,if you can get underneath the car you will see a small black panel in front of the front drivers side tire,In that area.Maybe when its making that noise you can listen in that area.

Thanks for the info everybody. I'll see if I can record it. I does sound like it's coming from the area of the driver's front tire/light area. I guess my real concern is that if it's loud enough to hear it, is something wrong with it?
Its probably just got some dust & dirt in it & the bearings are dry,If you can take it out and blow it out with an air compressor,Then put some oil or light grease in the bearings you should be good to go....................Paul
