my oil life is at 49%. i just completed a cam install. Should i change oil now so i have fresh oil moving over my cam and lubing all the new toys... or should i drive a 100miles first and then change oil? Also i will be getting on a dyno very very soon.
I asked east coast superchargers when I should change my oil after they installed the TR224. Chris's response was change it whenever the next interval is. Its was about 1000 miles for me.
Also, when I had my car re-ringed by the dealership, they added new oil, told me to drive it 1000 miles, and come back for the free oil change.. I only put about 3000 miles a year on my car.
Im having my new heads and cam installed next week. Ill change the oil in the 500-1000 mile range
I would drive it a few hundred miles and then change prior to dyno. I actually ran mine on the dyno, but the oil was fairly fresh and I am very clean when I work. I had an oil analysis done when I did change it to verify all the bearings had survived and all was well, you might want to consider this as well. I also had Terry Dyson review the oil analysis.
Change the oil immediately after breaking in the cam. Then again at 500-1000 miles. Most profesional engine builders will tell you the same thing. It's cheap insurance. When I put my new engine in my flatbottom I changed it after break in and after the first day out in it.

No "breaking in the cam" with hydraulic rollers.
I agree with your next statement for a non roller cam.
When you buy a new car you get a new cam too so why would there be a difference in when to change the oil. I feel it should be after 1000 miles to be safe.

Not to argue with you.. but you get A LOT more new parts in a engine when you get a new car too. Like everything. Rings, bearings, potential for shaving from manufacturing processes, on and on. That is why it is suggested to change he oil with new engine. I personally do it at 500 miles on the engines I build.
Don't get me wrong, I can agree with the better safe than sorry method of oil changing in situations like this.
