Default Strange HUD Issue

Today It was bright and sunny as I was driving down the road I noticed my HUD display was up on the windshield in blue whether it was on or off, but it was just the top portion, as I drove it scrolled down thru the whole thing, like I could see all the possible variations of what the HUD could show, but it was blue. A few minutes later I made a left turn and it was fine again. Even if I completely shut it off it was still there. Any ideas??? Its worked fine since and I've driven the car on similar days without an issue like this.

It could have been some sort of relection from the sun. I believe there is a morror in the HUD unit and at the right kind of angle with the sunlight hitting just right, this type of thing may be possible.

seemed like that to me too, but I've NEVER seen it before in 4 months of owning the car....

It's the sun doing it. The first time it happened to mine I thought the thing was going crazy. Couldn't read anything because everything was lit up in a blue color. It's only happened a couple of times. To test it, when it happens, turn the car around and head the other direction. It should then be ok.

You can see it easily with the sun behind you, maybe a couple hours either after sunrise or before sunset.

Yep, its the sun. When light gets shined in at just the right angle it will light up the display giving you what you seen. Below is a photo of the HUD display, as you can see is is blue in color, once light is shined into the display much like the flash in this photo the entire display will light up. There is actually two mirrors in the HUD so there is a few different angles which will cause this. Some times if the light refracts you will even see strange colors.

That extra little wire is the trigger for my extra LED shift indicators. That is attached to the SHIFT segment on the display, any time the HUD turns on the SHIFT segment my circuit turns on the extra LEDs.

Not to change the tone of the thread entirely but I have a 2000 coupe and my HUD seems to have "lowered" over the years. Of course, I thought at first it was just the seat that needed to be adjusted and I wasn't looking at it from the right angle anymore but that wasn't the case. The HUD seems really low on the windshield and I can't get it to go any higher. I can move it down till it's out of view almost entirely and then back up to the original point but no higher. Is this a sign of it going bad or what?

You can put your hand up near the windshield and create a shadow from the sun making it go away. Rarely will happen.

Normally the HUD display will be chopped off as it reaches the top, (at least for us tall people). You should be able to us a flashlight and look down in the HUD through the windshield and look over on the left side. I think you can see those switches from outside. Looking at the photo Connecticut posted the switches are top 1/3 and just right of the center. There is two small switches with two wires attached on each of the arc shaped slot, the slot looks white in the photo. If you notice there is a little tab sticking out in the middle of the slot, this HUD is set about half way top to bottom. This tab will move from one switch to the other as you move the HUD up and down. If you can see the switches see if they go all the way from one switch to the other. If they do then the HUD is working properly, if not then it is probably sticking or binding. Should be really easy to fix once you remove the HUD. If you can't see the switches from outside you might be able to compare the mirror angle to another C5 if anyone else near you has one with a HUD.
