I have installed a 160 degree thermostat in my '98 6-speed convertible. I was told I also need the Vinci fan controller and it should be set around 185 to 190 degrees F. What is the purpose of the Vinci and is it necessary?

The V.C. is used to manually adjust the on/off temps at which the fans operate. Remember that a 160 degree thermostat only indicates the lowest temp at which the thermostat will open. It does NOT mean your engine will remain at 160 degrees. To create an engine temp closer to 160 you would need to turn the fans on sooner (meaning at a lower temp than stock). To be honest a 160 is overkill as these motors were DESIGNED to run hotter that what you may be accustomed to in other vehicles. Do a search on thermos and you'll find a LOT of posts on the subject. Hope this helps....
I read a few of the threads about thermos. Here is another question: since I already have the Hypertech programmer and the 160 degree thermo, do I need the Vinci fan controller? Of can I simply reprogram the ECU w/ the Hypertech?
I spoke with Hypertech and if you are using the Power Programmer, you don't need the Vinci. The programmer allows you to set which thermo you have and the temperatures are already input into the computer.
I will leave this post up for others to review if they have the same questions.
