I have an '01 Vert A4 with 48,000 miles completely stock. The engine makes a ticking noise that increases with engine speed. At first I thought it was coming from the fuel injectors but listening more closely, it seems to be a lifter. Also, the noise is much more noticable on the drivers side of the engine and non existent on the passenger side. Oil level and pressure is good. Also, the engine seems to be idling a litlle rougher lately. Noise is the same with engine cold or warmed up. Any ideas?
Collapsed lifter is one idea. Also the LS1 is known to have a valve rocker go bad. Drain the oil and see if you get any needle bearings. Could have also broken a valve spring or maybe a bent push rod. Either way it sounds like something in the valve train.
Based on your description, and the history of the rockers spitting bearings, that is the first place I would look. See if any rockers have excessive play in them noting that some side to side motion when you move them is normal.
Brought the car to the dealer. Of course the tapping sound was "normal" per the service dept. This is a small dealer but luckily, there was a 2002 vette in for service. So I asked them to start up the 2002 so I can hear it make the same "normal" tapping sound. Guess what....it didn't! So to make a long story short the dealer replaced my lifters and now no more noise. Happy I have a GMPP. Regardless of that, why after only 48K miles did I have several partially collapsed lifters? Any thoughts? The car was never driven hard and had normal maintenance etc....
I have the same problem w/ my 05 C6. Ticking noise on the drivers side. It goes in the shop Monday...
