Default TPIS header install help??

I have a 97. Halltech Stinger and Borla stingers.
I just purchased a set of used (what I am told are TPIS) headers. I am beginning the install this weekend. Going to do all the work myself. Planning to go catless for now.

Here is install checklist for now.

1. Borla X pipe
2. New exhaust manifold gasket set.
3. Heat resistant material (like Koolsox).
4. 2 cat replacement pipes from local exhaust shop.
5. 2 Band clamps
6. O2 extension cable???
7. O2 sims ???

Questions
1. Do I need new exhaust studs?
2. What are the best exhaust gaskets?
3. Will I need O2 extension cables with TPISs
4. What exactly will happen if I don't have the O2 sims installed and can't wait to drive it.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Questions
1. Do I need new exhaust studs?

No..

2. What are the best exhaust gaskets?

I used the existing ones...or you can get new ones from the dealer..your choice

3. Will I need O2 extension cables with TPISs

I didn't..I kept my O2 sensors..evetually had them turned off after the CATs were gutted

4. What exactly will happen if I don't have the O2 sims installed and can't wait to drive it.

It will throw some codes....thats about it

Have fun

I read that my car will run lean.

My thoughts:

The headers will allow the exhaust to exit the chamber once the valves open. Thus letting more fresh air enter the chamber causing it to run lean. But...won't my MAF read the extra incoming air and compensate the fuel. It works with dry Nos systems.

Why can't I run it in my garage?? smell, noise, angry neighbors??

It will run rich....... I have not had a tune done, need to do that. But what happens with mine is when I come to a stop and idle a little, maybe 15 seconds I get a code. Now if I clear the exhaust system, rev the engine to 1500 rpm or so several times no problem. Obviously don't want to have to do that at every stop light.

Why would it go rich. Won't the PCM find the correct value on the look up tables after 100-200 miles??

Not really. Stock tunes are conservatively rich anyway. Mine is really rich after adding headers.....so I only gained 9 rwhp from the long tubes. A tune is next on my agenda....I expect to gain nearly 20 more rwhp from that. It's fine to slap them on there and see what happens.....certainly ain't gonna hurt anything. All cars are different.....some are fine without a re-tune. But to get the most out of them you'll really most likely need a tune.

Well I got the H pipe and stock manifolds off today. Took pretty much all day just doing it myself. I am wrapping things in high temp. insulation tomorrow and dropping the LTs in hopefully. Everything went smoothly so far following the instructions I found on ls1howto. thanks for all the advice and help. Sounds like I might have to make a trip up to Lingenfelter soon...

I got the passenger side on with little problem. I'm having trouble with the driver's side though. It says to bring it up from the bottom. I don't know if the TPISs will go up from the bottom. I don't have my car high enough yet so I'm going to try that. I tried taking it in from the top but it hits the big alternator bracket and gets stuck on the braided fuel lines. It gets to a point where the tab looks like it is going to hit my oil filter.

Any help??

thanks
